Elementary class we have been busy practicing for our concert. Students have enjoyed wearing their costumes and using their loud voices with lots of expression. Music practice has also been a major focus this week and students are certainly very confident with all their pieces.
In language we have just completed our third sight word list, and students are enjoying the challenge of analyzing the phonics of all these words. Home reading books are now organized and practiced every day; students are also very keen to read each different series. While reading, we are using different strategies to help us when we don’t know a word: look at the letter sounds, look at the picture, read on, and also decide if the word we use makes sense.
In maths we have focused on addition, subtraction, and multiplication and how they relate to one another. We have also transferred the information about our morning exercise circuit jogging onto a graph. Next week we will analyze this information and discuss what we can learn from it.
On Wednesday this week we visited JA office in Minami and helped write messages and draw pictures on the rice bags which they are sending to the African country of Mali. Students enjoyed learning about Mali and then thinking of encouraging things to say to the people there.
This week we also watched the soy bean harvest of the fields next to our campus. It was interesting discussing what the machines were doing.
On Monday we were able to play for an hour at Shonai Park. It was beautiful weather and the students really enjoyed playing and running with their friends.
