Greetings to you all, and the summer season. I was hoping for a bit more rain, but unfortunately we had a little showers. Well at least I did not have to buy a new rain suit. The new season welcomes in a new unit for grade 2.

Unit 2 is all about families and communities and how they make us who we are. The first, week of unit 2 was all about the introduction of unit 2, and this was an Introduction to the Central Idea; Lines Of Inquiry; Learner Profile Attributes; Approaches To Learning and Specified Concepts. The students did well to understand and grasp a lot of the new concepts.

We looked at an activity on a lion pride. Students were asked to discuss the different roles and responsibility of the lion, the lioness and cub. The students did really well with this activity and it was quite fun for me too, since lions are one of my favorite animals to learn about. The students learned that the lions, lionesses and cubs, all have different roles and responsibilities in the lion cub.

The students were asked to go home and conduct interviews with their regarding the different roles and responsibilities at home. The students were able to return to school with a lot of information and the different responsibilities that they have at their homes, such as setting the dinner table, making their own, and even brushing their teeth. The students have many more responsibilities than this, however, the students were only tasked with inquiring about just 3. On the 12th of, June we had visitors from preschool as we enjoyed a nice day of activities and search for bugs. We did let the bugs go at the end of our playday together.

Students were tasked with looking at different jobs such as doctors, police officers, etc. There are items related to each job that students had to match with the different jobs. For example, a police officer will be matched with a police badge, and the students had to cut and paste the images with the correct community role. On Friday, the 13th of June, the students planted some sweet potato that we can harvest and enjoy in autumn.

This week, the students had a pretty nice day with the parents visiting our campus and observing our classes. The observations were pleasant and it s always a good sight and presence to have the parents there. This gives the students an added bit of encouragement to do well and is just beautiful, positive determination for them.

During the parents visit, the students had to interview their parents regarding the different roles and responsibilities that their parents had when they were in elementary school. This was a good activity as it allowed the students to interact well. This also allowed the students to see similarities between themselves and their parents.

Friday, we will be making Ven diagrams about the differences between what the student’s parents did in elementary school and what the students’ are. We will also be making lion and lionesses face masks as a good way to close off the week. Thank you once again, for coming this week for our parents observations. I leave you with a popular African proverb. “It takes a village to raise a child.” Salutations, see you soon!
