As part of the Christmas tradition, the Philippines hosts the Giant Lantern Festival, a vibrant celebration showcasing elaborate parols that light up the holiday season. This week, our students started crafting their own version of the Philippines’ parol, or Christmas star lantern. First, they colored one large star and one smaller star using crayons, then carefully cut them out—everyone did wonderfully! Next, they painted a paper plate, which became the foundation for placing the stars. Finally, they added bright, joy-filled tails to complete the lantern. The result? A cheerful, colorful creation that lit up our classroom with happiness and tradition.

In our Unit of Inquiry (UOI) lesson, we explored the reasons why people in the community help one another through a “Think-Pair-Share” activity. Each pair selected a community helper and discussed the question, “Why do ________ help people in the community?” After thoughtful discussion, they shared their insights with their partner. Subsequently, each group presented their findings to the class. This collaborative approach allowed everyone to learn from their peers’ perspectives, deepening our understanding of the vital roles community helpers play.

Shooting Star students embarked on a meaningful project by creating a “Helping Hands Tree.” Each child traced their hand on green paper, cut it out, and wrote down ways they can help others in our community. These hand-shaped leaves were then affixed to a tree displayed in the classroom, serving as a vibrant reminder that even at a young age, everyone has the ability to help and make a positive impact. Building upon this initiative, next week, we will introduce a Classroom Job Chart and a Kindness Jar to further cultivate a culture of care and responsibility.

In our phonics lessons, we’ve successfully completed all the short /e/ CVC word families. The final families we explored were /-em/ and /-ep/. To reinforce our learning, we played a lively game of musical chairs, integrating these word families into the activity. This approach not only made the lesson fun but also helped solidify the students’ understanding of these word patterns.
