Students considered how sensory details, interesting adjectives and powerful verbs can help a reader imagine a place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also began our <strong>PICTS Sports Cinema group projects<\/strong> based on the short film <em>Girls Move Mountains<\/em>. The film has prompted some thoughtful questions connected to our current unit, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>How does where you are born affect the opportunities you have?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What actions did the girls and young women take to create new opportunities?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How do opportunities today compare with those in the past?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different groups are investigating the factors that influence opportunities, the personal qualities the girls demonstrated, and the challenges they faced. They are also comparing their experiences with life in <strong>Nagano<\/strong>. After collecting temperature data during sunny, cloudy and rainy weather, students used their results to create <strong>line graphs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We noticed that the increase in temperature was much more dramatic on a sunny day, with the maximum temperature occurring after midday. We then began thinking like scientists about <strong>why<\/strong> this happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students considered how the ground is heated by sunlight and then transfers heat to the air. We also discussed how different surfaces, such as <strong>asphalt<\/strong>, can affect temperature, and how wind can move warmer or cooler air around. We explored the idea that the temperature we measure can be influenced by several different factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mathematics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Mathematics, we developed our understanding of <strong>line graph vocabulary<\/strong>. Students matched key mathematical terms with their definitions and example sentences, helping them to use more precise mathematical language when describing and analysing graphs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Swimming<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, students took part in swimming lessons. Some students were feeling trepidatious beforehand, but everyone returned saying how much fun they had!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This led to a valuable discussion about learning new skills. We talked about how everyone starts somewhere \u2014 often making mistakes and finding things difficult before they become confident. We considered the importance of being <strong>understanding of where other people are on their learning journey<\/strong>, while also staying motivated ourselves when we experience setbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was wonderful to see students challenge themselves and come away feeling proud of what they had achieved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Warm Welcome to Our New Student!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a final note, we are delighted to welcome a new student to our school from Australia! He has recently moved to the local area with his family, who are big fans of winter sports\u2014so they are certainly in the right place here in Nagano!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone was very excited to welcome him to our school. He is currently getting to know his classmates, learning everyone\u2019s names and making new friends. We look forward to seeing him settle in and become part of our school community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s all continue to make him feel welcome and help him feel at
