How was life at ISN? What did you gain from your time there?　ISN

At ISN Middle School, I made many friends from various countries. Each friend and teacher was unique. Spending time with my friends every day, I feel that I improved not only my English skills but also my communication and task management skills. This has led to a generally positive attitude, motivation, and confidence, such as thinking “I want to try” or “I can do it.” Just like the frequently heard term “Student Agency” at ISN, the more I proactively engaged with what was happening in school life, the more I experienced a variety of learnings that cannot be summed up in a single word. It was a very enjoyable experience. As someone who loves traveling the world, the experience of understanding and accepting the values of people in the international school environment was truly invaluable. I might visit those countries in the future.

In class, I frequently explored things I was interested in freely, and had discussions with teachers about my interests and concerns. With their support, I had fulfilling learning time, which deepened my understanding of the things I love. Even in events and everyday life, interpreting, summarizing and presenting, and leading student groups became routine, so I no longer get nervous. Even when asked suddenly, I can handle it quite naturally.

In preparation for taking entrance exams for Japanese high schools, I received personalized guidance from ISN, allowing me to focus on key points at my own pace. At that time, I thought it was normal since it was the only method I knew, but looking back now, I realize how precious that time was and how much support I received. Around the summer of my third year of junior high, I decided to attend a cram school twice a week and participated in summer courses. Studying for exams with peers from different schools and districts was refreshing, and it enhanced my concentration and awareness.

In the Middle school, we started with the Cambridge program’s Lower Secondary curriculum, and in the latter half, we followed the IGCSE curriculum. Japanese classes were in the afternoon and included all subjects. Fridays were dedicated to club activities, house activities, outdoor activities, and learning excursions. Activities such as camps for learning permaculture and creating sustainable environments were part of our daily routine.

In classes conducted in English, most of the time was spent on inquiry-based learning, with both teachers and classmates evaluating my performance and providing feedback for improvement. It was always clear what I needed to work on for the next stage of assessment, and I understood this well myself.

For my future dreams, I consider attending a university abroad to be realistic. I have some universities in mind, and my research showed that attending a high school where I can study and live in English would increase the likelihood of achieving my dreams more than attending a Japanese high school. Therefore, I looked for boarding schools. I applied to state high schools in Canada, private high schools in the UK, and international schools in Japan, and attended interviews.

Based on my grades from the two and a half years of middle school, I received offers from several overseas high schools. Over the next two years, my family and I discussed many times which high school to choose. At the same time, I aimed to take the entrance exams for Japanese public high schools. One reason was that I wanted to prove to myself that my academic ability in Japanese was also strong, and that I could confidently say, “I’m doing well.” Another reason was that I wanted to experience Japanese high school life with local students. Thanks to the support from the school’s system and the unique support from the teachers at ISN, I was able to achieve both of my goals, to study in both English and Japanese, with better results than I had anticipated (a pleasant surprise). The efforts I made during this time gave me great confidence, leading me to believe in my research skills (the ability to prepare for what is needed in advance) and the mindset that “if you prepare, you can succeed.”

School, I loved playing table tennis and enjoyed practicing with my club friends and participating in tournaments. I practiced every day, competed in tournaments, and made many great memories.

At ISN, students from 1st to 9th grade (sometimes in different groups) can choose from various activities such as basketball, soccer, and skateboard clubs. At ISN, friendships formed from preschool continued, and each friend became very close. We often played together on weekends and spent time like a family. Many of my friends excel in activities such as swimming, tennis, skiing, and mountain biking, achieving results that get them featured in newspapers. It’s always exciting to see my friends being recognized, and thanks to the teamwork with my peers, I’ve had many diverse experiences. Over the three years of middle school, I feel my perspective, interests, and understanding of different personalities have grown even more.

How was life there considering extra-curricular activities?　ISN

The ISN Middle School has as many extracurricular activities as the Elementary School. These include nature observation around the campus, stargazing, visiting rivers with many fireflies, creating and maintaining vegetable gardens, building sheds and composters, helping out on farms (we received lots of apples), planting and harvesting rice, cooking classes, and mochi-making events with the local community. I also began to envision my future, comparing it to these hands-on experiences.

How were you participating volunteer activities?　ISN

I participated in various ISN Middle School and other volunteer activities. What is life in the Japanese public high school like? What do you enjoy about it and what are the challenges there?

I was looking for information on the selection process for overseas high schools. Around the spring of my third year in middle school, the announcement for selection was made. I submitted an application form, and if I passed the selection process, an interview would be scheduled around the summer. Along with the application form, I submitted my grades from ISN. ISN has portfolios for preschool and elementary school, and in elementary and middle school, in addition to the IB learning evaluation report, a numerical report card for each subject is also included. The pre-interview selection is entirely based on middle school grades. A letter of recommendation is also attached.

I started studying seriously for exams in the fall. Inspired by trying out a summer course offered by a cram school, I began attending the cram school twice a week. At the same time, the amount of study materials, such as workbooks and textbooks, increased significantly. Initially, I was learning how to use these materials and getting the hang of the pace. Eventually, I started taking regular mock exams. To focus, I sometimes shifted my English classes to focus entirely on studying for exams in Japanese.

The entrance exams for public high schools are almost entirely based on the final exam scores, in contrast to the selection process for overseas schools. We consulted with various stakeholders, including the board of education and high school principals, about how the absence of internal assessments at a free school would affect my application. We repeatedly received explanations that the lack of internal assessments would not be a disadvantage, and after experiencing the exams, this proved to be true. Instead of internal assessments, we listed my achievements on a report card. As long as the report indicated that I could handle a regular school life without issues, it did not heavily influence the entrance exam results. It was all about the exam scores on the day. Incidentally, I ranked 67th in the entrance exam.

Every day at high school with my friends is very enjoyable. I am purely enjoying the new environment, which is different from what I have experienced so far. Although the content of the classes has increased, making it challenging, I ranked 11th out of about 300 students in the June exams. At ISN, studies rarely focused on scores; instead, awareness, behavior, and skills were valued more than knowledge. Being evaluated by scores is refreshing. While I expected my English and math scores, I was surprised and delighted by my perfect score in science and high deviation scores in subjects like geography.

In summary, good grades during the two years of middle school are advantageous if you plan to advance to overseas schools or Japanese international schools. Some schools may ask questions in interviews such as “What is your dream?” “What are recent social issues?” “Do you agree or disagree? Why?” They might want to hear how the student’s interests connect with their values and societal contributions, and how these connections can make an impact through school life. What overseas schools did you consider? Why did you choose that country? How did you plan out the preparation?

When I was in my second year of middle school, at the age of 14, I started thinking about my future high school. Australia, the UK, and Canada came to mind. Since I have a dream of becoming a pilot, I was considering high schools that would facilitate that path.

Australia came to mind because of its mild climate, the image of kangaroos, wombats, koalas, and also because my homeroom teacher from senior kindergarten to about fourth grade was from Australia.

I visited a boarding school in the UK. Having been to the country before, I found it easy to imagine living there. Additionally, both my parents graduated from universities in the UK, which gave me a sense of familiarity through their stories. The presence of several world-renowned universities in the UK also influenced my interest.

Practically speaking, economic reasons were also a consideration. Upon researching, I found that most boarding schools charge about 6 million yen per year for tuition and boarding fees, with some costing up to 12 million yen, which ruled out private schools and those with high pound costs. I began considering public and state high schools. Most boarding schools that actively accept students from overseas or outside the local area are private. Public high schools are generally cheaper than private ones, but the tuition fees for international students are higher than for local students. Additionally, there are boarding fees to consider.

Prioritizing safety, I discovered state high schools in Canada. The natural beauty and proximity to nearby cities piqued my interest. The University of British Columbia is one of the universities I am interested in, and its location within a similar cultural area heightened my awareness. During my preparations, I remembered that one of the ISN summer camp instructors was Canadian. When I asked him about it, I was surprised to learn that he was from a city near the region where the high school is located.

After the interview, I was required to submit an essay titled “My Motivation for the Application” I received a conditional offer notification, and after paying the tuition fees, I officially enrolled in a Canadian state high school as a Grade 10 student. There were various tasks to handle, such as confirming the orientation day for the first day of school, booking flights, and managing the ten-month program schedule up until the subsequent vacation, What do you enjoy there? Do you find some things difficult?

Life there is fun and interesting but also pretty different and sometimes tough. I enjoy having lots of friends, hanging out with them, and joining in on school activities like class matches and speeches. Being in clubs and joining competitions is also great. But I’ve had some difficulties too. At first, I didn’t know much about the school programs and felt confused. Additionally, the number of subjects to study increased in high school, making academics more challenging. After a while, though, I got used to most things and started to enjoy it more.

What is summer camp like to be in? What do guides do to plan, organize and have fun with students? What have I achieved, experienced and gained from the days spent there?

The summer camp was a program where students could spend their summer break outdoors, camping, doing activities, and making friends from all over, all while enjoying English. As an assistant to the guides, I helped with planning, leading the students, keeping them engaged, and making sure they had a great time. Despite the challenges we faced, we worked as a team to overcome them and stay prepared for whatever came next. We had tons of activities and games, and as guides, we joined the students in hikes, paddleboarding on the lake, jumping in the river, and more. The highlight for me was swimming in the lake and then relaxing in a warm onsen afterward. We all worked together to pack for the trip, plan the schedule, and ensure everyone was having a blast. Reflecting on the camp, I realized how much I had grown. I became more comfortable with camping, being outdoors, and dealing with big bugs. I also developed leadership skills and improved my English communication, especially when being with students.

After all the fun at camp, I had one week left at my public high school before heading to Canada. I wanted to make the most of it by enjoying my time with friends, experiencing life at the school, and showing my appreciation to everyone who supported me. I spent my lunch breaks going around the school, getting documents signed, and saying goodbye to friends. On my last day, my class surprised me with a farewell, and I took lots of pictures, thanked everyone, and packed up my desk and locker. I was preparing not just physically but also mentally for the big move, trying to understand the emotions I would experience during the journey and farewells.

The next day was my flight, marking the start of my long journey and new school life. I felt a mix of sadness and excitement. I packed everything from clothes and books to food and documents. My flight wasn’t direct; it included a transit in Dallas, where I got a brief taste of the U.S. I noticed that things like food, buildings, and space were bigger compared to Japan, and I enjoyed this new experience. As I approached Calgary, I was amazed by the city’s night view—it was stunning and took my breath away. Before going to Strathmore, I spent a few days exploring Calgary, enjoying the sights, especially Prince Island Park and the cityscape from there. It felt like walking through a painting. The climate was nice and dry, and the park was spacious, which I really liked. I also found the “Skywalk,” also known as the “+15,” to be a very unique and impressive innovation. It’s a network of bridges connecting buildings across blocks, allowing people to walk and travel indoors during harsh winter weather.
