Wow! What a tremendous week we’ve had in Waterfall class!

We began the week by continuing our unit of inquiry on animals and human’s relationships with animals. Students talked about where different foods come from, whether it is from plants, trees, or animals. In order to really deepen our understanding, we made pancakes together! Before that, we looked at real wheat, and wondered whether it might come from plants or animals. We then discussed how the flour that we use to make pancakes is made with the wheat that we had been touching and examining! Next, we mixed the flour with an egg, and thanks to our inquiries last week, students knew already that eggs come from chickens! Where last week we were making savoury food with eggs, students could then see that eggs could also be used to make sweet treats! Milk was added, and thanks to our milking experience, we knew exactly where that came from too! But wait, there was one final ingredient we weren’t familiar with: Honey! After a really interesting discussion, students themselves realised that honey with made by bees!

Before we ate our delicious pancakes, we all said thank you. Thank you cows! Thank you chickens! Thank you bees! Thank you farmers! Thank you drivers! Students were building on their knowledge, connecting with their experience, and then expanding into developing their gratitude for all the animals and people who connect to our lives. Tremendous action!

This week, the older students went swimming in central pool, with the coaches continuing to be impressed by their progress as little water athletes. Back at Shimauchi campus, the other students had another wonderful rhythmic lesson with Miss Miwako. This time we pretended to be having an adventure in the forest, catching and even becoming insects!

Finally, after hours and hours of practice and dedication, students were able to participate in their first sports festival! We raced together, with each and every student giving their best to the very end. We also became “funky farmers” to display our dancing skills, showing what animals eat, and what products we receive from them. All in dance form! We sang our school theme, played a ball game as a school, and mums and dads even jumped in to participate in carrying a giant ball to its goal! The day was magical. Lots of new sights and sounds, some nerves, but a lot of learning and fun. All teachers were so proud of the Waterfall students, and so grateful for the support and love felt from parents and family members. Well done Waterfall! You are super heroes!
