Milky Way, 09 June

This week Milky Way class is continuing their transdisciplinary theme of who we are, with the central idea that we use our five senses to perceive and interpret the world around us. The students reviewed their new knowledge of vision (the sense of sight) and colour, including how colours can be mixed to make different colours. Similarly, they reviewed content related to sound and audition (the sense of hearing) and continued to associate sounds with their English words and onomatopoeia. The class played a game where a blindfolded participant identifies a speaker by their voice and their position in the room by pointing in their direction. Doing this, they realised that people’s voices are distinct and recognisable and that the origin of a sound can be generally located by direction. Also, the students realised that many ‘everyday, classroom items’ (such as scissors, tape dispenser, paper) can be identified by their sound alone.

Additionally, the class began an inquiry into olfaction (the sense of smell); as a group, they came up with a huge list of the various smells around us and tried to identify various things by smell alone (for example, curry, fruit, dishwashing detergent, coffee, tea, mouthwash). There were also olfactory-related words and sentences added to their existing unit vocabulary and language which now comprises thirty words and nine sentences. In this regard, the class is doing well and learning very quickly.

In mathematics, the class has begun learning about time. They have defined the hour-, minute- and second-hands, learned that the numbers on the clock represent hours and the smaller marks represent minutes, been counting aloud to sixty, counting to sixty in fives {while being introduced to the concept of multiplication by learning (for example) that four groups of five make twenty and the corollary, that with twenty (things/ minutes) four groups of five can be made}. Regarding telling the time specifically, the students first began reading the time on an analogue clock (o’clock and half past the hour) and next writing that time using digits. Subsequently, they were given times verbally (o’clock, half-past) in order to mark the hands on printed clock worksheets, as well as again writing the corresponding digital display. As the students further investigate clocks and time, the concepts of ‘halves’ and ‘quarters’ will be introduced and they will also learn to express time in terms of ‘minutes past’ and ‘minutes to’ the hour.

The class has continued with their morning physical activity and also during their time outside, they have formed groups and been given charge of some potted plants that they will water and monitor in the coming weeks.
