Milky Way, 20 May

Last week was Milky Way class’s final week on the theme of where we are in space and time. The class learned a large vocabulary related to the theme, as well as spending several hours over a number of days each creating a community in the form of a map. The students’ started this project by drawing their house or apartment in the centre of a poster-sized sheet of graph paper. Over the course of the week, various structures and transport systems were added, removed, and improved upon, with the goal being to reinforce the notion of the necessity for communities to be in a constant state of change. On Thursday and Friday, the students each presented their community to the rest of the class – speaking about the buildings and people therein, as well as answering subsequent questions from both the teacher and their classmates. The students’ drawings’ far surpassed teacher expectations and likewise, the image in their mind of the type of community they had created, along with the structures and people within their community was nothing short of excellent.

In language, the students are continuing to learn to recognise by sight, words from Dolch’s list of the most commonly used words in the English language. They have played games including bingo, various keyword games, memory games, and karuta. The students all enjoy these games and frequently request to play the games again – they have a particularly enjoyment of bingo.

In mathematics, the students are reviewing the rainbow facts (pairs of numbers whose sum is equal to ten). They are doing this concomitantly with each equation’s reciprocal subtraction. For example, if 6+4=10 and 4+6=10, then 10-4=6 and 10-6=4. A thorough understanding and ability to master these mathematical concepts is taking somewhat longer than anticipated. Many students are developing an understanding of this in their own time, some are having significant difficulty, and a third group already thoroughly knows this content. Consequently, during mathematics, the class is working in three groups. Students having difficulty are being taught together in a small group using pink and blue cardboard squares to represent each number in the equation to aid them in solving the additions visually and practically. This groups is working together with the teacher during calculation time to solve a lesser number of problems but ensuring understanding of the problems that are solved. A second group solves the problems on their own – some students solve the problems mentally and some students have also requested and obviously been given, the same squares to aid them in their calculations. A third group, at an advanced mathematical stage is working on rote learning of multiplication tables to prepare them for further advanced studies.

算数の時間は、Rainbow Facts(足して10になる数字のペアのこと)が時間をかけて行われています。

Next week, the class begins a new science theme based on the five senses.
