Milky Way, 30 June: Nature adventure

Milky had an exciting afternoon outdoors today. Taking advantage of the school’s rural surroundings, the class spent their afternoon doing activities of their own interest. The girls enjoyed picking many wildflowers and talking with each other.

6月30日、子どもたちは興味のあることをしながら午後の時間を思う存分過ごしました!

女の子たちはお花を摘んでおしゃべりをして楽しみました。

Meanwhile, the boys were exuberant in their pursuit of insects, tadpoles and frogs. They caught several frogs, insects and caterpillars. Upon returning to the classroom and debriefing, the children’s faces lit up with delight and anticipation when it was suggested that some type of in-class habitat could be made to accommodate the frogs so that their behaviours and lifecycles could be observed and ongoing. They all seem just as keen at the prospect of having to find a regular supply of proportionately sized insects for food, as well as having the duties of cleaning, changing the water and finding fresh flora to maintain such a habitat.

一方、男の子たちは虫、おたまじゃくしやカエルを捕まえたり追いかけたりして楽しんでいました。捕まえてきたカエルなどの生き物を教室で飼っていますが、それらの特徴やライフサイクルを観察している子どもたちは本当に楽しそうです。どうしたら虫を上手に飼育できるかな?と考えた子どもたちは外に出るたびに、食べられる生き物(小さなバッタなど)を捕まえています。もちろん、生き物の生活する虫かごを掃除したり、水や植物を新鮮なものに変えてあげるお世話もしっかりとしています!

On the class’s return to the school, the students each picked radishes that they had been growing in pots outside the front entrance. The radishes were washed and eaten at afternoon snack time. Initially, there were only four students who wanted to eat one but when their teacher told them a story from his own childhood, about growing and eating the same radishes with salt, almost every student wanted to eat one salted. This coincidentally was a good example of how the five basic tastes they learned about in their current unit on the five senses merged with a spontaneous occasion in their daily life. They were significantly more interested in sampling the radishes they had heard about from the teacher’s story, as it negated their personal preconception of radishes; this along with an additional opportunity to sample the taste of ‘salty’ combined with the sensation of ‘spicy’. Furthermore, many of the students actually asked for more.

外から戻ってくる際にプランターで育った赤かぶを収穫して午後のおやつで食べようとしましたが、4人しか食べたいといいませんでした。しかし、クリス先生の子ども時代にも同じ赤かぶを育てて塩と一緒に食べたという話を聞いた瞬間、クラスのみんなが食べたい!!と言い出し、実際に塩と一緒に食べてみました。この数週間五感について学んできた子どもたち、塩のしょっぱさとかぶのピリッとした辛さを舌で感じとって、表現することができました。最終的にはみんなそんな味覚が気に入ったのか、もっと食べたいと言っていました!とても楽しい午後を過ごすことができました。
