Milky Way, 30 June

Milky Way class has been continuing the transdisciplinary theme of who we are, with the central idea that we use our five senses to perceive and interpret the world around us.  Last week the class investigated touch, playing a ‘mystery box’ game to describe the feeling of unseen objects (for example: smooth, dry, cold, soft) as well as trying to identify the object. They also observed that the touch receptors in the fingers are much closer together than those in the arm or leg. This was done by noticing how two pencil tips could be detected as two pencil tips on any of their fingers however, when the two pencils were touched to the arm or leg, they were perceived as only one unless they were further spaced.

The class also followed an inquiry into what it would be like if one of the senses were lost. Herein the class discussed lip-reading for the deaf and each student had the opportunity to mouth some simple phrases to the class who were quite surprised to realise the extent to which they could perform this and similarly, the relative ease with which they could accomplish it.

もし私たちが一つでも感覚を失ったら?どうなるの?そんな疑問を考えるため、子どもたちは耳が聞こえない人の立場になって、お友達が声を発さずに言う言葉(1,2単語)を読み取ることをしました。リップリーディングといって、口元を見るだけでなんと言っているのか分かったことに、子どもたち自身も驚いていました!

The students also experienced blindness – working in pairs, one student was blindfolded while the other was the guide.

目が見えないってどんな感じ?という疑問には、ペアになったうちの一人が目隠しをし、もう一人が手を取ってガイドする役になって実践してみました。

In language, the class has learned to read and speak an extensive senses-related vocabulary, as well as learning to read and speak many sentences that describe the senses and their respective organs. They have also started studying the next set of 25 sight words from the list of Dolch and continue to practice writing in their language books daily.

In mathematics, they are learning about clocks and telling the time in both digital and analogue forms. While doing this, they practice counting to 60 and counting to 60 in fives. The students now understand ‘o’clock’ and ‘half-past x/ x:30 and they are beginning to learn about ‘a quarter past’ and ‘a quarter to’ the hour.
