The Koi-no-Bori festival, also known as the Koinobori Festival, is a traditional Japanese celebration held on May 5th (Children’s Day). During the festival, families display colorful, carp-shaped streamers (koinobori) to wish their children good health and happiness. Koinobori are often flown from poles outside homes, and in some regions, they are displayed over rivers to create a spectacular sight.🐠

Shooting Star students enjoyed making koinobori for the Children’s Day celebration. We started by listening to the story called Kodomo No Hi told by Ms. Ayako. They loved the story and listened attentively. Since there are different colors of koinobori, they chose which one they liked best. Each color represents a family member which is connected to our UOI lesson. The colors of the koinobori have specific meanings, with the black carp traditionally representing the father, the red/pink carp representing the mother, and other colored carp representing the children. They cut out different shapes to make the body parts of the carp, glued and decorated them to make it beautiful.😍

鯉のぼりは、5月5日（こどもの日）に飾られる日本の伝統的な行事の一つです。こどもの日には、子どもたちの健康と幸せを願い、色とりどりの鯉のぼりが飾られます。鯉のぼりは家の外のポールから揚げられることが多いですが、地域によっては川 の上に揚げることもあり、壮観ですね。🐠

Shooting Starさんたちは、こどもの日のお祝いのために鯉のぼり作りを楽しみました。まずは、綾子先生の「こどもの日」のお話を聞きました。子どもたちはこのお話が大好きで、熱心に耳を傾けていました。鯉のぼりにはいろいろな色があるので、好きな色を選びました。それぞれの色は、UOIのレッスンにつながる家族の一員を表しています。鯉のぼりの色には特定の意味があり、伝統的に黒い鯉は父親、赤やピンクの鯉は母親、その他の色の鯉は子供を表しています。鯉の体の部分を様々な形に切り抜き、糊で貼り付け、飾り付けをして、美しい鯉のぼりを作り上げました😍。

In our UOI lesson, we learned about the different types of families by identifying and counting who and how many family members are in each family picture. We discovered that families are different from each other because there are families that have a father, a mother, and children, families that only have grandparents and grandchildren living together, families that only have one parent and children, families that don’t have children, and families that live with their relatives like grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. While learning about this, we remembered to be open-minded that we should accept someone’s family type and don’t tease or laugh at them for who they are, instead be understanding and caring to them. We also had a group activity wherein each group drew one type of family.🌺

UOIのレッスンでは、それぞれの家族の写真に誰が何人写っているかを数えながら、家族の種類について学びました。父親と母親と子どもがいる家族、祖父母と孫だけが一緒に住んでいる家族、片親と子どもで住んでいる家族、子どもがいない家族、祖父母や叔父叔母、いとこなどの親戚と一緒に住んでいる家族など、家族にはそれぞれ違いがあることがわかりました。このようなことを学びながら、私たちは、相手の家族のタイプを受け入れ尊重し、誰かをからかったり笑ったりするのではなく、その人を理解し、思いやるというオープンマインドを忘れないようにしました。また、各グループが家族のタイプを1つずつ描くというグループ活動も行いました🌺。

Shooting Star students are getting used to their workstation time and become more motivated in doing the activities. Every morning, they work on various activities that help develop their English, Math, Fine Motor, and UOI skills. As a reward, we give them a sticker after finishing their job.🎉
