みなさん、こんにちは。
It has been a very exciting week! We had our sports festival and starting our new UOI! We also had a very fun swimming lesson, so it has been a very busy, but fun week.
今週は、とてもエキサイティングな週となりました。今週、私たちはスポーツフェスティバルがあり、そして新しいUOIが始まりました。そしてまた、みんな大好きなスイミングレッスンがあったり、盛りだくさんの行事でしたが、とても楽しい週となりました。
UOI (People’s actions impact animals)
As I mentioned before, we started our second unit this week. We have sent out more detailed information explaining the unit, but I will quickly introduce it again.
Our transdisciplinary theme this time is “Sharing the planet”, with the central idea being “People’s actions impact animals”. We are going to learn about the different animal habitat’s that exits around Nagano and Japan, and what kind of actions impact their lives.
今週からユニット２が始まりました。ここでも、ユニット２についてどんなことを私たちは学んで、探求をしていくかをご紹介します。
教科の枠を超えたテーマは、「地球を共有する」、中心的なアイデアは、「人の行動が動物に影響を与える」です。長野周辺とまた日本に生息するさまざまな動物とその生息地、そして動物の生活にどのような行動が影響するかについて学んでいきます。
This week, we started out with our first line of inquiry (LOI), “Animals in our environment”. We have decided to keep this topic more local, and therefore not focus on animals that live in habitats like jungle, arctic, desert etc. This is so that we can have more relatable lessons as we move on to the other LOI’s this unit.
最初のLOIは「身の回りの動物たち」です。このトピックでは、ジャングル、北極圏、砂漠などの生息地に生息する動物には焦点を当てず、私たちの身近に住んでいる動物に焦点を当てていきます。
We have four different habitats that we will be focusing on. They are as follows:
以下の4つの異なる生息地に住む動物たちに焦点を当てていきます。
- Farm
- Mountain forest
- River/Lake/Pond
- Ocean
Prior knowledge assessment
This assessment is to get an idea of how much the students already know about the topic before moving on. By checking this, we can both adjust the lessons ahead to their level and compare how much they have learned by the end of the LOI.
“Prior knowledge assessment(事前知識評価）” この評価は先に進む前に、子どもたちがトピックについてすでにどれだけ知っているかを知るレッスンです。この事前知識評価をすることで、先のレッスンをレベルに合わせて調整し、LOIの終わりまでにどれだけ学んだかを比較することが出来ます。
The teacher asked the students to imagine that we were going on a bus trip to a lake or river! After getting off the bus, we took an imaginary walk around this lake. What kind of animals can we see at the lake? The students got a worksheet with pictures of different animals. Their task was to circle the animals they think they can see while walking around a lake not far away from the school. The teachers took the time to talk to all the students while they were doing the worksheet.
先生は、子どもたちに湖や川へバス旅行に行くことを想像してみようと言いました！そして、バスを降りたあと、この湖の周りを想像でお散歩をしました。先生がみんなに、この湖の周りにはどんな動物が見えるか尋ねました。子どもたちは、さまざまな動物の絵の描いてあるワークシートを見ながら、この湖で見ることが出来ると思う動物の絵を選びました。
After the worksheet, we took a look at some videos showing different habitats. The teacher often passed the videos, so that we could discuss what we were watching. A good start to what looks to be a fun UOI!
ワークシートの後、さまざまな動物の生息地のビデオをみんなで見ました。子どもたちは、とても興味深そうに楽しんで見ていました🤩

Farm and mountain forest habitat
We had two lessons this week to learn about two of our four habitats. This week we learned bout farm and forest animals. We started the lessons by talking about the habitat. What kind of place is it? Hot or cold? Dry or wet? Have you ever been there? Then, we talked about the animals living there. We watched a few videos, often pausing to ask question or discuss what we were seeing.
今週は、４つ生息地のうち２つの生息地、「農場」と「森」に生息する動物について学びました。
先ずは、生息地についてお話をするところからレッスンを始めていきます。どんなところ？暑いですか？寒いですか？乾いている？それとも湿っている？そこへは行ったことがありますか？など、先生が子どもたちにさまざまな質問をしながら、子どもたちに生息地のアイデアを与えていきます。次に、そこに住む動物についてお話をしました。私たちはいくつかの映像を見ながら、それぞれの場面で質問をしたり、話し合ったりしました。
After watching the video, we put a poster of the habitat on the wall. All the animals were put in a basket. The students came up to the front in the class, blindly picked one animal from the basket, introduced it to the class, and the stuck it to the poster. We also talked about what each animal sound like and what food they like to eat. We did a worksheet where they had to match the food to the correct animal.
ビデオを見た後、壁に生息地の絵が描かれたポスターを貼りました。そして、一人ずつ前に出て目を閉じ、箱に入った農場に住む動物のカードを一枚ずつ引いて発表し、ポスターに貼り付けていきました。
また、それぞれの動物の鳴き声や食べ物についても話をしました。動物の鳴き声では、見事に言い当てていました🤩食べ物についても、みんなで学んだあとにワークシートを使って、どの動物が何を食べるかマッチングをしました。
では、問題です🤩お馬さんは、何を食べるでしょうか？
Tanabata wishes
Last week we brought home strips of paper so that we could write down our wishes.
This week, we sat down together and looked at everyone’s different and nice wishes.
There a nice piece of bamboo in the hallways at the school. We took turns hanging our wishes on the branches of the bamboo. They were all very happy to announce their wish to their friends!
先週、私たちは七夕の短冊ををおうちに持ち帰りました🤩おうちの皆様には、ご協力いただき本当ありがとうございました。子どもたちは朝来ると、とても嬉しそうに先生にかわいい願い事が書かれた短冊を渡してくれました☆彡
みんなで一緒に座って、みんなの素敵な願い事をクラスのお友達とシェアしました。自分の願い事もお友達の願い事もとっても嬉しそうに、そして楽しく共有でき、素晴らしい時間でした。
スクールの廊下にバンブーツリーがあります。みんなで交代でその笹に願い事を付けていきました。みんなのキラキラしたお顔が本当に素敵でした🤩

Swimming lesson
We had a very fun swimming lesson this week.
We started the lesson by splashing around with our feet. The student lay down on their tummy on the edge of the pool while kicking their feet. The teachers made it rain on them while they were kicking furiously!
今週は、楽しいスイミングレッスンがありました。足で水しぶきを上げることからスタートです‼子どもたちはプールサイドにうつ伏せになり、バタ足に挑戦です。子どもたちがバタ足をしている間、先生は子どもたちに雨☔を降らせます☺
We also walked in the water without the platform. The swimming instructors used a pool noodle to create a small tunnel that the had to go under. While walking under the tunnel they had to put their mouth under water and blow to make bubbles. There is no tears or fears in our students when it comes to being in the water! Good job everyone!
また、水中の台を使わずに水の中を歩く練習をしました。スイミングコーチが小さなトンネルを作ってくれたその下を子どもたちは歩いて行きます。トンネルをくぐる時、子どもたちは口を水の中へつけ，ブクブクと息を吐きます。
毎回スイミングレッスンでは、果敢にお水の中での活動に挑戦してくれるオーロラさんです🤩Good job‼Aurora🤩
Playtime and vegetable picking!
Even though the weather said that there would be heavy rain this week, we found some time to play outside without the rain! Lucky us! We also got to pick some of the vegetables from our plants!
今週は雨が続き、みんなが大好きな外遊びがなかなかできないでいますが、それでも雨の合間を縫ってみんなで外へ遊びにいきました。そして、みんなで植えた野菜の苗に実が生り、収穫もしました🤩苗が育ち、花が咲き、そして小さな実が生り始め、だんだん大きくなり、子どもたちは毎日興味深そうにその成長を感じ、教えてくれます☺
Sports festival!
Thank you so much for coming to our sprots festival and making it such a fun event! And I was so happy that everyone was able to come! Since everyone was there, I will not go in to too much details, but I was happy that everyone tried their best at all the events. I also saw some good dancers during our Paprika dance! So again, thank you to both parents and kids for helping us make the event so energetic and fun. I saw a lot of sweaty kids (and teachers) by the end. That’s how it should be!
