Welcome to Meadow’s second blog of the month of July. It’s only been 2 weeks since we began learning about insects but we already know the majority of insect names and can even name them in our sleep! I guess you could even call us entomologists !
7月2回目のMeadowクラスのブログへようこそ。昆虫について学び始めてからまだ2週間しか経っていませんが、私たちはすでに昆虫の名前の大部分を知っていて、寝ている間に名前を言えるほどです！（笑）昆虫学者と呼んでもいいくらいです！
Many people use the word bug and insect interchangeably but this isn’t accurate. A bug is actually a type of insect. It has mouthparts made for piercing or sucking. For example a mosquito or a flea . This might sound a tad confusing but, all bugs are insects but not all insects are bugs. The point is that you should try as much as possible not to use the word bug when teaching your little ones about insects. Of course bug is a short and easier word to say for 2 year olds. Insect may seem longer/ harder but it’s the correct term!
多くの人がbug(虫)とinsect(昆虫)を同じ意味で使っていますが、これは正確ではないのです。虫というのは実際には昆虫の一種です。刺したり吸ったりするための口器を持っています。例えば、蚊やノミのようなものです。これは少し紛らわしく聞こえるかもしれませんが、すべての虫は昆虫であるが、すべての昆虫が虫であるわけではないのです。重要なのは、小さな子供たちに昆虫について教えるときには、できるだけbug（虫）という言葉を使わないようにすることです。もちろん、bugは2歳児にとって短く言いやすい単語です。Insect（昆虫）の方が長く、難しく感じるかもしれませんが、正しい言葉です！
Insectopia
“Insectopia” is said to be a legendary insect paradise. In other words, it’s an insect lover’s wonderland. As soon as you step foot into Meadow class it feels like an insect lover’s paradise. There are pictures of insects all over the classroom. When we take some time to relax and just keep calm you can notice some students staring at the insects as if they are mesmerized. Our hope is that the pretty visuals we prepared for them will make it easier for them to remember the insect names. We spent most of the week reviewing the insects that were introduced last week and on Friday the teacher introduced 5 more insects to us. These are the firefly, caterpillar, dragonfly , snail and spider. Our lessons next week will be focused on these 5 insects.
「インセクトピア」は伝説の昆虫パラダイスと言われています。つまり、昆虫愛好家のワンダーランドなのです。Meadowの教室に足を踏み入れた途端、そこは昆虫愛好家のパラダイスのように感じられるます。教室のあちこちに昆虫の写真が飾られていて、リラックスして落ち着いていると、まるで魅了されたかのように昆虫を見つめている子どもがいることに気づきます。私たちが用意したきれいなビジュアルが、昆虫の名前を覚えるのに役立つことを願っています。今週は先週紹介した昆虫の復習に時間を費やしましたが、金曜日にはMs.Amandaがさらに5匹の昆虫を紹介してくれました。firefly(ホタル)、caterpillar(イモムシ)、dragonfly(トンボ)、snail(カタツムリ)、spider(クモ)です。来週のレッスンでは、この5つの昆虫に焦点を当てます。
Gym class
This week we went to Nanbu gymnasium for gym class. It was our first time going there so everyone was happy to experience a new environment. Now that we have tried different things with the balloon a couple of times, everyone has now gotten a hang of how it works. After carefully listening to the gym teacher’s instructions, we rallied up as a team and made a house from the balloon!
今週は体育の授業で南部体育館に行きました。初めて行く場所だったので、みんな新しい環境を体験して嬉しそうでした。パラバルーンを使って何度かいろいろなことに挑戦したことで、パラバルーンがどのように動くのかコツをつかんだ様子でした。体育の先生の指示をよく聞いて、みんなで協力して大きなお家を作ることができました！
Colored water play
On Thursday the weather was a bit cooler than usual so we couldn’t clock in some time in the pool.Instead we enjoyed playing with colored water. Students were given transparent plastic tumblers and PET bottles to fill up with their color of choice. You could hear remarks such as, “this is broccoli juice”, “it’s milk”, “this is grape juice” etcetera. It was almost like we were revising and putting back to memory the color names we learnt in April. We all had a great time!
木曜日はいつもより少し涼しかったので、プールに入ることができませんでした。その代わり、色水遊びを楽しみました。透明なプラスチックのコップやペットボトルに好きな色を入れました。これはブロッコリージュース」、「これは牛乳」、「これはブドウジュース」などという声が聞こえてきました。まるで4月に習った色の名前を復習しているようでした。みんなとても楽しんでいましたよ♪
Music class
Everything in life is subject to a difference in opinion but it is a widely accepted view that music makes the world go round. Without music we would lose our ability to relate to others. Reflecting back to when the new school term began and comparing that with the current situation,we as Meadow teachers notice that there’s a positive change in the way Meadow students interact with one another. We believe that they are learning important social skills in music class! A huge thank you to Ms. Nishimura! We appreciate you so much.
人生におけるすべてのことは意見が分かれるところですが、音楽が世界を動かすというのは広く受け入れられている見解だと思います。音楽がなければ、私たちは他者と関わる能力を失ってしまうかもしれません。今年度が始まった頃を振り返り、現在の状況と比較してみると、私たち担任は、Meadowさんたちが互いに交流する方法に前向きな変化があることに気づきます。音楽の授業で大切な社会性を学んでいるのだと思います！西村先生、本当にありがとうございます！
