This week Waterfall Class is reading Sesame Street: We’re Different We’re the Same to help them share what they remembered about their bodies and to help them have an open-minded view of the world around them.  The students enjoyed seeing the beauty in all the people and characters in the story. They said that we cannot make a rainbow without many different colors and then students chose colors to build a rainbow as different as the people in the book. 今週、Waterfallでは絵本『セサミストリート：We’re Different, We’re the Same（みんなちがって、みんないっしょ）』を読みました。

この絵本を通して、自分たちの体について思い出しながら、お友だちとの違いを大切にする気持ちや、まわりの世界を広い心で見つめることを学びました。

読みすすめていくと「にじはいろんな色があるからきれいだよね」というすてきなことを話してくれるお友達もいました。
いろいろな人やキャラクターが出てきて、イラストも明るくてかわいい絵本なので、ぜひご家庭でもこの絵本を読んだり、聞いたりして、一緒にお話を楽しんでみてくださいね。

People all look different and they all have different feelings, too. So, everyone looked at the Hungry Caterpillar cards to see how he was feeling and then they chose how they felt. Next they used clay and face mats to make different expressions to show their answers to ‘how are you?’

人の顔がみんなちがうように、実は気持ちもちがうんだよね。
そこで『はらぺこあおむし』の気もちカードを見ながら、「このあおむしはどんな気もちかな？」とみんなで考えてみました。
そのあと、「How are you?」の問いかけに、にっこり笑顔で「I’m happy!」と答えたり「I’m cold」と答えたり、いろいろな表情でこどもたちそれぞれのいまの気持ちを教えてくれました。粘土を使っていろんな表情を作ることも楽しみました。

Everyone in Waterfall likes singing the 5 Little Speckled Frogs to practice numbers 1-5 and gain better fine motor skills by counting with their fingers. They are using their new motor skills to help them become independent. They can open snacks, close buttons, trace lines, circles and develop the ability to write nicely.

In Phonics they are learning the ABC Song and all about Letters A and B.  They know that the letters look and sound different and raced to sort out some pictures that start with A or B. They sang and followed along with their pointer fingers in order to sing each of the letters as they touched them on our ABC Wall, ABC Mats or the screen. Each student got to lead the class in singing and pointing without the music, too. 5ひきのカエル（5 Little Speckled Frogs）」のうたを1〜5までのかずを指でかぞえながら、楽しく歌っています。手遊び歌などで、指先を使う動きは、細かな動きの発達を促してくれます。スナックの袋を自分で開けたり、ボタンをとめたり、線やまるをなぞったり…少しずつ“じぶんでできる！”がふえてきていますよ。

フォニックスの時間では、「ABCのうた」を歌いながら、アルファベットの“A”と“B”を学んでいます。見た目もちがえば、音もちがうことに気づき、「これはAからはじまる！」「こっちはBだよ！」と、絵カードの仕分けも楽しみました。
指でアルファベットを指さしながら歌ったり、音楽なしでも大きな声で歌ってくれる生徒もいます。

大きなアルファベットのカードを順番に並べる競争をして、ちゃんと合っているか自分たちで歌ってチェック！たのしみながら、たくさんのことを身につけている子どもたちです♪

Waterfall students enjoyed making new discoveries during the nice weather this week. They learned that plants need water and a sunny day to grow.  To illustrate this UOI they looked at a lot of seeds to identify their different shapes, sizes and colors. They planted a variety of seeds, as well as some small tomato plants. Students looked at the leaves to see if they were pointed up or down and said whether the plant was happy or sad.  They watered the plant and left it in a sunny place for a couple of days to see that it is happier with sun and water. From this students will learn that plants are the same as them in many ways; they grow, change and have needs.

今週はお天気のいい日がつづき、Waterfallのみんなは、たくさんの“はっけん”を楽しみました！
トマト、かぼちゃ、ひまわり、豆など…いろいろな植物の種を観察して、種にもさまざまな形や大きさ、色の違いがあることを学びました。植物によって種が全然違うことに興味津々の子どもたち。「トマトだいすき！」「ピーマン食べられるよ！」と種の説明のたびにお話ししてくれる姿がとてもかわいかったです。

そして、小さなトマトの苗を植えて、いろいろな種も蒔きました。葉っぱが上を向いているか下を向いているかを見て、「このトマトはうれしそう！」「ちょっとかなしいかも？」と、植物の気もちも想像していました。
お水をあげて、日当たりのよいところに置いてあげると…数日後には元気になってきた様子を見て、植物にとってお水や太陽の光が必要なことを確認しました。

こうした活動を通して、子どもたちは「植物も自分たちと同じで、育つし、変わるし、必要なものがあるんだ」と感じていくことができたらいいなと思います。
