【Sydney Study Tour Day3🌞】

シドニー滞在3日目です🌞朝方は小雨が降っていましたが、その後は26℃を超える暑い日となりました。

私たちが訪れた3月は、オーストラリアでは夏の終わり～秋に差し掛かるところでした。それでも残暑を感じる日中も多く、基本的には半袖半ズボンで活動します。ですがいったん雨が降ると途端に肌寒くなることもあるので、ウインドブレーカーや薄手のデニムジャケットなどで体温調節をします✨🌬

まず午前中はDeep Diveのクラスルームにてオーストラリアに関する授業とワークシート問題を解きました。クラスルームは、宿泊施設から歩いてすぐのビルの中にあります。冷暖房が完備され、ホワイトボードやスクリーンも整っています✏

今回の授業では、主にオーストラリアスラング、オペラハウスとシドニーの歴史を学びました。

オーストラリアスラングレッスンでは、初めて聞く単語や長文のリスニングなどなかなか難しい内容でしたが皆とても楽しんでいる様子でした。授業では、動画でスラングを学んだり、Mr.Coreyが用意したワークシートを解きます。

皆さんは、”オーストラリアスラング”と聞くと、どのような言葉を思い出しますか？有名なのは、G’day!かもしれませんね！

今回私たちが学んだスラングはとてもここには書ききれないほどです！！

例えば…

BBQ→Barbie

Expencive→Exxy

Breakfast→Brekkie

Dinner→Dindin

Macdonald→Maccas　などなど！響きが面白いので生徒は大笑いしながら学んでいました☺

また、この日の午後に予定した現地での買い物🛍について話し合いをしました。ワークシートに載っている写真を見て、どのようなシチュエーションなのか、それをオーストラリアではどのように呼ぶのかなど新しい知識が増えます🔦

そして、この日のハイライトであるオペラハウスとロックス（シドニーの歴史ある街並み）探索に向けてそれらの歴史を学びました。

オペラハウスの建築デザインの特徴、デザイナー、完成までの奮闘などを学びます。綺麗なシンボル、だけでなく悲しい背景もあることを知ったり、素晴らしい内容でした。

クラスルームを後にして、ランチに向かいます🥄🥢

この日のメニューは…ラーメンです！それも日本でも有名な一風堂です🍜

え？！せっかくオーストラリアにいるのに日本食？！と思う方もいるかもしれませんが、日本食が恋しくなることもあるのです…💦もちろんこのツアー中は、オーストラリア食もたくさん楽しみましたが、参加生徒のリクエストやコンディションをみながらDeep Diveチームが最適な食事を楽しませてくれるのです♪ちなみにツアー中何ヵ国の料理を楽しんだかといいますと…オーストラリア、イギリス、タイ、メキシコ、ギリシャ、日本、中国、アメリカ、ベトナム、イタリアなどなど！多国籍料理を楽しめたのもいい思い出です。また、生徒は食わず嫌いをせずにまずはどのような料理にも挑戦している姿が素晴らしかったです！✨

少し久しぶりの日本食に、生徒も大満足でした！☺

ちなみにオーストラリアには日本食レストランも日本の食材を扱うスーパーマーケットもたくさんあります✨

ランチ後には、まずロックス散策を楽しみました！

ロックスはシドニー ハーバー ブリッジに近い歴史的な路地の地区です。地元の人々や観光客は屋外のロックス マーケットで交流したり、屋台の食べものやハンドメイドのファッションを購入したりしています。現在は観光名所として賑わっていますがその昔は実際に人々が住んでいた様子が見渡せる特別な場所でもあります。私たちも昔の住居跡を見学し、まず1つの家がとてもコンパクトであることに驚きました！😲写真ではなかなか伝わらないかもしれませんが、当時のままのレイアウトで、私たち9人で1階が埋まってしまうほどコンパクトな作りです。

ここはキッチンかな？ここはお風呂？など想像しながら見学しました。

そしてついに…！本日のハイライト、オペラハウスへ向かいます！今回はオペラハウスの中へ入るという大変貴重な経験をしました。

Deep Diveは今まで日本の学校をたくさんガイドしていますが、今回ISNだけの特別プランとしてオペラハウスの内部に入り、全編英語のガイドツアーを体験しました！

内容はこちらに載せることはできませんが、構造や特徴などみっちり聞くことができました。内部では、間もなく上演される演劇の装飾や組み立てをしている様子も伺えました。いくつも劇場があり、中にはツアーゲストの私たちでさえ見学を許されない厳格なセキュリティ箇所も…！ツアー終了後にはガイドさんに、皆とても積極的に質問をしている姿に感動しました…！実はこのツアー前に、皆で「各自最低1つの質問を聞いて帰る」ことを目標にしました。こうして目標を達成すると様々な角度から自身がつきますね！

オペラハウス見学後は、特に高学年チームが楽しみにしていた買い物の時間です🛍✨

ロックスにはオーストラリアらしいお土産を扱うお店がたくさんあります。その中から、家族や自分へのお土産を数点選びました。

個々での買い物なので、支払いや店員さんとのやりとりも自分で解決します✅途中で、シドニーで最も有名なジェラートも食べました🍦

お土産を選ぶ時間は、ツアー中にたくさん設けてあります。

Hi everyone,
Today we studied about Australian slang, shopping phrases, and the history of Sydney and the Opera House in the morning.
Students learnt about how we shorten so many words in Australia to make them easier to say. For example, “expensive” becomes “exxy”, or “McDonald’s” becomes “Maccas.”
After lunch we visited “The Rocks”, which is one of the oldest towns in all of Australia. We saw many historical buildings and learnt about how people used to live in them.
Finally, we went on a guided tour inside the Opera House where we learnt all about the design and building process. All of the students were able to ask at least one question to the guide and it was a very good experience!
I think everyone is doing very well and they are all trying to use English at all times during the day. Everyone has been on their best behaviour and we have had no problems at all.

ホテルに戻り、皆疲れていると思いきやびっくりするほど元気で、Deep Diveチームと楽しくボードゲームをしました。（疲れているのは引率のスタッフだけだったようです…）子どもたちの体力には大変驚かされますね！

しかし翌日も学びが待っています。引き続き無理をせずに活動します。

Day 4はオーストラリア全般の歴史を学び、歴史博物館や有名なHyde Parkを散策します♪

Day 3 in Sydney

It was drizzling in the early morning, but later in the day, the temperature exceeded 26°C, making it quite a hot day.🌞

We visited Sydney in March, which in Australia marks the transition from late summer to early autumn. Even so, the daytime often felt like the lingering heat of summer, and we generally wore short sleeves and shorts. However, once it starts to rain, it can suddenly feel chilly, so we used windbreakers or light denim jackets to regulate our body temperature.🥵

In the morning, we had a class at Deep Dive’s classroom, where we studied Australia-related topics and worked on a worksheet. The classroom is located in a building just a short walk from our accommodation. It is fully equipped with heating, cooling, whiteboards, and a screen.👌

In this lesson, we mainly learned about Australian slang, the Opera House, and the history of Sydney.✨

The Australian slang lesson included unfamiliar vocabulary and some challenging listening comprehension, but everyone seemed to be enjoying it a lot. We learned slang through videos and worked on worksheets prepared by Mr. Corey.

When you hear the term “Australian slang,” what kind of words come to mind? One famous one might be “G’day!”✏

We learned so many slang terms that we can’t even list them all here!

For example:

• BBQ → Barbie
• Expensive → Exxy
• Breakfast → Brekkie
• Dinner → Dindin
• McDonald’s → Maccas

The funny sounds of these words had the students laughing as they learned.

In the afternoon, we discussed our upcoming shopping activity. Using photos on the worksheet, we learned to identify different scenarios and what they’re called in Australia, gaining more new knowledge.

We also studied the history of the Opera House and The Rocks (a historical district in Sydney), in preparation for our exploration later in the day.

We learned about the Opera House’s architectural design, the designer, and the struggles during its construction. It’s not just a beautiful symbol—it also has a sad history, which made the lesson very meaningful.✏

After leaving the classroom, we headed out for lunch.🍚

Today’s menu: Ramen! And not just any ramen—it was from Ippudo, a famous chain even in Japan.🍜

You might think, “Why eat Japanese food when you’re in Australia?!” But sometimes you really start to miss it… While we enjoyed a lot of Australian food during the tour, the Deep Dive team thoughtfully selected meals based on student preferences and health conditions.

In fact, during this tour, we enjoyed cuisine from a variety of countries: Australia, the UK, Thailand, Mexico, Greece, Japan, China, the US, Vietnam, and Italy, to name a few! Trying all these international foods was a memorable part of the trip. The students showed great attitudes, trying every dish without being picky.☺

Everyone was very satisfied with this rare Japanese meal!

By the way, Australia has plenty of Japanese restaurants and supermarkets that sell Japanese groceries.😲

After lunch, we enjoyed a walk around The Rocks!

The Rocks is a historic area near the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Locals and tourists mingle at the outdoor Rocks Market, buying street food and handmade fashion. It’s a popular tourist spot now, but it was once a residential area. We explored the remains of old houses and were surprised at how compact they were! Photos might not fully convey it, but the layout is preserved as it was, and just nine of us filled up the entire first floor!

We imagined what each space might have been—“Is this the kitchen? The bathroom?”—as we toured the houses.

And finally… the day’s highlight: the Opera House!☺

We had the rare experience of going inside the Opera House. Deep Dive has guided many Japanese schools before, but this time, ISN had a special plan that included a guided tour of the interior—all in English!

While we can’t share the full content here, we got to learn in depth about the structure and features. We even saw stage crews preparing for an upcoming performance. There are multiple theaters inside, and some areas were strictly off-limits—even to us guests—due to high security.✏

At the end of the tour, the students impressed our guide with their eagerness to ask questions. Before the tour, we had set a goal: “Everyone must ask at least one question.” Achieving that goal gave the students a sense of confidence from different angles.✨

After visiting the Opera House, it was time for shopping—a much-anticipated event, especially for the older students.🛍

The Rocks has many shops selling Australian-themed souvenirs. Each student picked out gifts for their families or themselves.

Since this was individual shopping, students handled payment and interactions with store clerks on their own. Along the way, we also had some of Sydney’s most famous gelato.🍦

There are many opportunities for souvenir shopping throughout the tour.

After returning to the hotel, we expected the students to be tired—but to our surprise, they were full of energy and happily played board games with the Deep Dive team. (It seems the only ones tired were the staff!)

Children’s stamina really is amazing!☺

But learning awaits the next day, so we’ll continue at a steady pace without overdoing it.⭐

Day 4 will include learning about Australia’s broader history, visiting a historical museum, and exploring the famous Hyde Park.
