Go Around the World! – Savanna 01/26-01/30

This week in Savannah, we began LOI 2: People around the world celebrate special moments in different ways.

We started our exploration by learning about Christmas in the Philippines. The children were introduced to the story of Jesus and learned how Filipino families celebrate this special holiday. As part of our hands-on learning, the children created their own parol, a traditional Filipino Christmas lantern, which they enjoyed making and decorating.

We also had a very special experience this week with a guest speaker from South Africa, Mr. Thapelo. The children were excited to see traditional clothing from different South African tribes and learned about the many ways people say “hello” in different languages. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to see and appreciate cultural diversity firsthand.

To wrap up the week, we explored Iran’s New Year celebration, Nowruz. The children learned that the new year is celebrated in different ways around the world and that traditions reflect the values and history of each culture.

As a special treat, Ms. Rosa invited each student to share their name and wrote their names as part of the writing activity. The children were truly amazed to see their names written in different styles and forms, making the experience both exciting and personal for them.

To wrap up the week, we explored Iran’s New Year celebration, Nowruz, and reflected on how people around the world welcome new beginnings in different ways.

We also watched a story about being different. In the movie, the children saw characters with different colors and traits who were brought together through friendship. After watching, the children shared what they noticed and imagined from the story. Together, we learned that all these differences are called diversity. In the children’s own special words, they described it as being “special.” They learned that being different—or being special—is something to be proud of.

What a lovely week of learning it has been in Savannah. We will continue exploring different celebrations and cultures next week, and we look forward to sharing more of our stories with you.

Have a lovely and warm weekend.

We look forward to continuing our journey around the world as we explore more cultures and celebrations in the coming weeks.
