This week in the Savanna Class, we began exploring the idea of what a family is. The children shared their thoughts and experiences, helping us understand that families can look different for everyone. Through discussions and activities, we started identifying who is in our families and how we are connected to the people who care for us.

To begin the unit, we engaged in a provocation activity by looking at pictures of families doing different activities. The students carefully observed each image and shared what they noticed, what they liked, and what they thought was happening. They also discussed what kind of group the people might be. The children shared thoughtful ideas such as, “They are washing something,” “Hugging a baby,” and “Someone has a bag.” Some students also added, “They are good people” and “They are wonderful people.” This helped us begin thinking about relationships and roles within families. The children also chose one picture and acted out what was happening, making the activity even more engaging and meaningful.

To assess their prior knowledge about families, the students drew pictures of their own families and talked about each member. They answered questions like: “Who is in your family?”, “What do you do at home?”, and “Who helps you at home?” This encouraged students to think more deeply about the different roles people have at home.

今週のSavannaクラスでは、「家族とは何か」について探究を始めました。子ども達は、自分の思ったことや経験したことをみんなと共有し、家族の形は人それぞれ違うことを理解し始めました。話し合いやさまざまなアクテビティを通して、自分の家族には誰がいるのか、そして自分たちを大切にしてくれる人たちとどのようにつながっているのかを考え始めました。

ユニットの導入として、色んな活動をしている家族の写真を見ながら、プロボケーション（興味づけ活動）を行いました。一枚一枚の写真をよく見て、自分はどの写真が好きか？、写真の人たちは何をしているのか？などをみんなと共有しました。また、その人たちがどのようなグループなのかについても考えました。

子どもたちからは、「何かを洗っているよ」「赤ちゃんを抱っこしている」「誰かがバッグを持っている」など、よく観察した意見が出ました。さらに、「いい人たちだね」「すてきな人たちだね」と話す子もいました。この活動を通して、家族の中での人とのつながりや役割について考え始めることができました。

また、自分の好きな写真を一枚選び、その場面を実際に演じてみる活動もしました。お友達が演じることで、より興味をもって理解することが出来ました。

家族についての事前理解を知るために、子どもたちは自分の家族の絵を描き、それぞれの家族について話しました。「あなたの家族には誰がいますか？」「おうちでは何をしますか？」「おうちでは誰が助けてくれますか？」といった質問にも答えながら、家庭の中で人々が担っているさまざまな役割について、より深く考えるきっかけとなりました。

In another activity, “Who lives in your house?”, the children created a craft. First, they made a house by folding an A3 paper, following step-by-step instructions from the teacher. They were very proud of themselves when they successfully created their houses. Then, they cut out and pasted pictures of their family members inside. As they worked, they thought about who lives in their house, who sleeps there, and who shares meals together. This hands-on activity helped them express their understanding of family structures in a creative way.

別の活動「Who lives in your house?（あなたのおうちには誰が住んでいますか？）」では、子どもたちは製作活動に取り組みました。まず、先生の説明を聞きながら、A3用紙を折って家を作りました。先生が見せる手順に沿って折り、上手に家を完成させることができると、子どもたちはとても誇らしげな様子でした。

その後、家族の写真を切って家の中に貼りました。活動を進めながら、「誰がこの家に住んでいるかな？」「ここで誰が寝るのかな？」「誰と一緒にごはんを食べるのかな？」と考えていきました。

自分たちのお家作りをする活動を通して、家族の構成についての理解を表現することができました。

During our phonics lesson, we played a fun and interactive Letter Match Hunt to build letter recognition skills. The children were given uppercase and lowercase letter cards and worked to find matching pairs. After finding their matches, each child recited the letter and its sound. Everyone participated actively and showed great enthusiasm for learning.

フォニックスレッスンでは、文字を認識する力を育てるために、「Letter Match Hunt」をしました。子どもたちは大文字と小文字のカードを受け取り、同じ文字の組み合わせを探しました。

マッチするカードを見つけた後は、それぞれの文字の名前と音を声に出して発表しました。みんな意欲的に参加し、学ぶことへの高い意欲を見せてくれました。

The students also enjoyed both indoor and outdoor play. Indoors, they had fun using playdough to create different shapes such as candy, dresses, and stars. Outdoors, they especially enjoyed playing in the sandpit and engaging in pretend play, such as hosting parties, cooking, and making cakes with their friends. Others loved running, chasing games, and playing with hoops.

子どもたちは室内でも戸外でも元気に遊んでいます。室内では、粘土を使ってキャンディーやドレス、星など、さまざまな形を作って楽しく遊びました。

戸外では、特に砂場遊びを楽しみ、お友達とパーティーごっこやお料理ごっこ、ケーキ作りなどの見立て遊びに夢中になっていました。その他にも、走ったり追いかけっこをしたり、フープで遊んだりすることを楽しむ子どもたちの姿が見られました。

It has been a wonderful start to our unit, with students actively participating, sharing their ideas, and learning more about the important roles people play in their lives. We look forward to continuing this journey as the children deepen their understanding of themselves, their families, and the world around them.

子どもたちが積極的に活動に参加し、自分の考えを共有しながら、自分や周りの人たちがどんな大切な役割を果たしているかについて学ぶ、素晴らしいユニットのスタートとなりました。

これからも、子どもたちが自分自身や家族、そして周りの世界への理解をさらに深めていけるよう、この探究を続けていくことを楽しみにしています。
