朝食は昨日に引き続き、その日の目標設定やスケジュール確認をしながら、フレッシュフルーツやシリアルを中心に軽く済ませました。
午前9:30から10:30まではクラスルームでディベート練習の続きを行いました。前日に宿題として出されていた内容を確認しながら、それぞれの主張や論点への理解をさらに深めることに集中しました。
ディベートはチームで行う活動ですが、一人ひとりが必ず発言しなければなりません。自分の担当部分だけを覚えておけば良いわけではなく、チームメイトが緊張して言葉に詰まった際にはサポートをしたり、即興で飛んでくる反論に対して説得力のある返答を考えたりする必要があります。
とても難しく、大きなチャレンジですが、児童たちは自分のパートだけでなくバディの友達の内容も確認しながら準備を進めており、昨日と比べて明らかに自信がついている様子が見られました。
その後は、みんなが楽しみにしていたTaronga Zooへ向かいました！
Taronga Zooへは、オペラハウス前のCircular Quayからフェリーに乗って移動しました。児童たちが選んだ席はもちろん屋上デッキ。シドニーハーバーを一望できる美しい景色に歓声が上がり、みんな夢中で写真を撮っていました。Taronga Zooに到着後はまず昼食を楽しみました。サラダやフィッシュ＆チップスでしっかりエネルギーを補給した後は、Mr. Coreyが作成したAnimal Worksheetに取り組みました。
ワークシートでは、児童一人ひとりに異なるオーストラリア固有動物が割り当てられています。
「どこに生息しているの？」
「何をどのように食べるの？」
「天敵は何？」
といった質問に答えるため、園内を歩きながら情報を集めました。少し駆け足ではありましたが、動物たちを観察しながらたくさんの学びを得ることができました。また、英語で行われる動物ショーも観覧し、オーストラリアならではの動物について理解を深めました。
Taronga Zooではかなりの距離を歩いたため、帰りのバスでは疲れて静かになるかと思いきや、そんなことはありませんでした。友達同士で楽しくおしゃべりをしたり、日本の手遊びをMr. Coreyに英語で説明したりと、最後まで元気いっぱいでした。
夕食はお寿司をテイクアウトし、毎朝朝食を食べている共有スペースでみんな一緒にいただきました。
夕食後は少し休憩した後、すぐにHomeworkの時間です。毎日取り組んでいるDiaryは、2〜3文で終わるものではありません。講師からは基本的に15文以上書くことが課題として出されているため、児童たちはその日の出来事を振り返りながら、一生懸命英語で文章を書いていました。
さて、明日はいよいよNaraweena Public Schoolでのプレゼンテーションの日……の予定でしたが、学校側の都合により、DebateとPresentationは6月26日（木）に一日を通して実施されることになりました。
その代わり、明日はAustralian Museumを訪問します。プライベートガイドによる英語ツアーに参加しながら、広い館内を見学する予定です。スケジュール変更について児童たちに確認したところ、「練習する時間が増えたから嬉しい！」という前向きな声が多く聞かれました。明日も新しい学びと発見にあふれた一日になりそうです！
Breakfast was once again a simple but healthy meal of fresh fruit and cereal while students reviewed the day’s schedule and set their personal goals for the day.
From 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., students continued their debate preparation in the classroom. Since homework had been assigned the previous day, the session focused on reviewing their work and developing a deeper understanding of the debate topic.
Although debate is a team activity, every student must actively participate and speak. It is not enough to memorize only your own section. Students must be prepared to support their teammates if they forget their points due to nervousness and respond persuasively to unexpected counterarguments.
It is a challenging task, but the students worked hard with their debate partners and reviewed not only their own sections but also their teammates’ arguments. Compared to yesterday, there was a noticeable increase in confidence throughout the group.
After the classroom session, it was finally time to head to one of the most anticipated destinations of the trip—Taronga Zoo!
The group traveled by ferry from Circular Quay, located near the Sydney Opera House. Naturally, everyone chose to sit on the upper deck, where they could enjoy breathtaking views of Sydney Harbour. The students eagerly took photos and enjoyed the spectacular scenery along the way.
Upon arriving at Taronga Zoo, the students enjoyed lunch before beginning their educational activities. After refueling with meals such as salads and fish and chips, they completed an Animal Worksheet created by Mr. Corey.
Each student was assigned a different native Australian animal and was asked to investigate questions such as:
- Where does it live?
- What does it eat and how does it find food?
- What are its natural predators?
While moving around the zoo, students gathered information and observed the animals closely. They also attended animal shows conducted in English, providing valuable opportunities to learn more about Australia’s unique wildlife.
Despite spending much of the day walking around the zoo, the students were far from quiet on the bus ride home. They chatted with friends, laughed together, and even taught Mr. Corey traditional Japanese hand games in English.
For dinner, the group enjoyed take-out sushi together in the common room where they usually have breakfast each morning.
After a short break, it was time for homework. Students continued working on their daily diaries, which are expected to be at least 15 sentences long. Rather than writing only a few sentences, they reflected on the day’s experiences and challenged themselves to express their thoughts in English.
Tomorrow was originally scheduled to be Presentation Day at Naraweena Public School. However, due to scheduling changes on the school’s side, both the Debate and Presentation sessions will now take place on Thursday, June 26.
Instead, the students will visit the Australian Museum tomorrow, where they will participate in a fully English-guided private tour and explore the museum’s extensive exhibits.
When asked how they felt about the schedule change, many students responded positively, saying they were happy to have more time to practice and prepare.
