Greetings!
So, we started this week out in the school garden. Having begun work last week on how the garden could look for next year, Monday had us outside measuring slope and contour. We did this using a Bunyip Water Level. The boys worked well together and coordinated their efforts as a group. They seemed to quickly grasp the two concepts of contour (height of land above sea level) and slope (the degree of vertical incline of land). And , were able to apply these to marking the land.
We also took soil samples from five different parts of the small field and then came back to class and tested these to find out what kind of soil we have in the garden area. We will be looking at the results of our test samples tomorrow.
As you may have gathered or heard, we are currently working on an eco-design of the garden that will benefit not just the plants but all the surrounding wildlife. By creating better growing conditions we will also grow better and healthier vegetables, which in turn will benefit us. So, with the right design, we can create a win-win situation for everyone.
We have set a date of Friday October 27th for implementing our design and this will involve help from all the students and teachers at the Gojo campus. Of course, if you would like to join us and help, by all means feel free.
We also took time this week to talk about our futures and where we think we would like to go and what we would like to do. It was interesting hearing the boys ideas, as well as their visions of what they could become. I hope you make time as well to talk with your child and consider what they want to do with their lives.
We are also continuing to read with our group reader book, “The Giver”. It is definitely a worthwhile read and I can understand the accolades that it has garnered. We considered a thought-provoking idea this week, in a whole community having no concept of colour. Is it possible? What would that be like? We pondered and wondered aloud at this idea.
