Savanna is wrapping up our unit inquiry on Community Helpers. We played a game “Guess Who Am I” with charade. You cannot tell us the name of the community helper, you have to act it out. We had lots of laughter and fun guessing! We also reviewed our Jump Out Words by reading them in sentences like “when I am sick, I see a doctor”. We matched pictures to the correct community helpers in these sentences.

Savanna was asked for their reflection for this unit. What did you like doing for this unit? Can you name the community helpers? What they wear and use? How do they keep us safe and/ or healthy? Savanna: They enjoyed the field trips to the police station and the fire station. “I liked the fire station. We could go into the ambulance too, and that was cool. Firefighters put out the fire. They also help animals stuck in the trees by using their ladders. I like vets. When some pets or animals are sick, vets can help them. I like to learn about community helpers. They are helping us… keep us safe and healthy.”
Savanna has been writing to their friends and ‘posting’ their letters in our mailbox. Our postman for the day (the Line Leader) picks up the letter, stamps it and delivers them! We went for a walk around the neighbourhood too and spotted community helpers! Savanna has been reviewing their numbers and phonics skills. We sometimes use Starfall Kindergarten, a child-friendly website with no advertisements. For basic activities like letter sounds and counting, there is no subscription fee. We read a Japanese book about people from all around the world. One of our Savanna students brought it to class for her Show and Tell. Thank you. The richly illustrated book showed that people wear different clothes, speak in different languages and play different games. Yet, children are the same everywhere, they like to sing and play.
What a timely book! Savanna will be tasked to sing a song, and deliver a message to new ISN students in the Welcome Ceremony in April. As the new Rainforest class, they will sing “Hello to all the Children of the World”! Please see the song below. Till next week, have a wonderful weekend.
