Hello everyone! Welcome to Milky way’s third blog of the month. The week began with reviewing the meaning of the 3rs but with a particular emphasis on REDUCING. From the very beginning, we tried to stick to definitions that distinctly defined reduce, recycle and reuse as three separate, independent words. “Reduce means using a little less. Recycle means using old items to make new ones .Reuse means using something more than once.” This has been the students’ guideline since the beginning of the unit. However, when they were tackling Monday’s worksheet where they had to categorize pictures into things that can be reduced and reusables, they realized that plastic bottles can fall under both categories. Some of the students’ opinions were as follows: Plastic bottles can be reused because they can be used more than once to store water or other beverages. They can also be reduced in the sense of reduction of plastic use. The students and teachers alike carry water bottles from home to drink tea and water everyday. There’s always a choice of buying bottled water but that would mean unnecessary use of plastic. Hence plastic bottles can be reused and reduced!

This week’s phonics lesson focused on the i_e sound. The words introduced were bite, nine, like , time, five, ride, lime, white, drive and smile. The students each had a paper with an i_e word written on it. They did rock ,scissors ,paper and the winner had to read the word they had in their hands. The opponent then had to sit down after their paper was cut or the rock broke their scissors or when the paper wrapped their rock. The team that had the last person standing won!

For this week’s Japanese lesson they learned how to write”ke”.

They read “I can hop “this week.

The students have been diligently watering their garden and the cucumbers and radishes are growing well!

They were introduced to parts of a plant last week so they did a cut a paste activity where they had to build a plant from the pieces they cut. The aim of the activity was for them to be able to recognize and name the parts; stem, leaves and flower.

This week we had CARING,BALANCED , COMMUNICATORS and PRINCIPLED students. They helped their classmates when they saw them in need. They asked for seconds at lunch time meaning they ate well and also had a power nap during the rest time that means they are balanced. They expressed their feelings and thoughts through verbal communication. They showed that they are principled by doing the right thing; using walking feet indoors instead of running. Great work Milky way!
~The week ahead(June 23-27)~
The students will continue reflecting on the unit, as they wrap up their inquiry into the transdisciplinary theme of “sharing the planet”. As the unit comes to an end, they will be dedicating most of their time to learning about the growth of plants and vegetables.
Have a nice weekend!
