Nagano Milky Way: Exploring the World of Plants (June 23rd-26th)

Hello there!

This week, our class took the first steps into our exciting year-long Unit of Inquiry, all about Plants! 🌿 To kick off the unit, we started by discussing what we already know about plants—and we were so impressed with the children’s prior knowledge!

As part of our prior knowledge assessment, we talked about two main ideas:

  1. The parts of a plant
  2. What plants need to live and grow

During our group conversations, the children eagerly shared what they already knew. Many children confidently named the parts of a plant—such as the leaf, flower, fruit, stem, and roots. When asked what plants need, they shared ideas like water, sunlight, air, and soil—a great foundation for the learning ahead! One of them mentioned a part of the leaf, the stomata, which receives air for plants to grow.

We used drawings to help them express their thinking. Some even made connections to experiences in their own gardens or when walking outside!

Over the coming weeks, we’ll dive deeper into plant life—observing, exploring, planting, and discovering together. It’s going to be a fun and meaningful journey as we nurture curiosity and build new understandings about how plants grow and how they help the world around us.

Stay tuned as we continue to grow our learning—just like our plants! 🌻🌾

Have a nice weekend!
