Nagano Milky Way: Our Visit to Aeon BIG: Learning How they Care for the Environment (Sept. 1st-5th)

This week, our class had the wonderful opportunity to visit Aeon Big and learn about the many ways they help protect the environment.

One of the first things we discovered was their recycling initiative. Aeon Big provides special bins outside the supermarket where people can drop off recyclable items such as PET bottles, aluminum cans, styrofoam food trays, cardboard, and newspapers. What’s more, the bins are available 24 hours a day, making it easy for everyone to recycle at any time. When we asked why the company does this, their staff explained that this is their way of giving back to the environment.

We were also fortunate to tour the processing area of the supermarket. There, we saw the kitchens where sushi, fried foods, and other meals are freshly prepared. We even had a peek inside the freezer where meat is stored. One of the most impressive things we learned is that Aeon Big only produces 0.1% food waste! It was inspiring to see how carefully they manage their resources and reduce waste, showing their strong commitment to sustainability.

Our visit was not only educational but also eye-opening. We came away with a better understanding of how businesses can play an important role in protecting our planet. Aeon Big showed us that with dedication and thoughtful practices, it is possible to reduce waste and care for the environment in meaningful ways.
