CANYON: Unit 2 Animals… it’s a Wrap! September 29 to October 3

Foremost, our warmest ISN welcome to our new Canyon student and his family! We hope that you will make many new friends, and have lots of fun playing and learning!

UOI REVIEW

For the unit review, we assessed each student’s learning in different ways – through artwork, picture matching game, worksheet activity and finally an interview one to one with each student. This makes for a more holistic, inclusive and diverse approach in assessment.

ANIMAL COLLAGE

We picked some leaves and twigs when we went for a walk. This is Canyon’s first attempt at a collage craft. Using our imagination and referring to pictures, Canyon made interesting animals out of nature. Yellow chicks, green chicks, brown owls, an elephant, and more! We talked about the animal’s head, body, wings, tails. We used words like ‘leaves, twigs, sticks’. We used ‘glue’ to ‘stick the leaves on the paper’. Artwork is a rich vehicle for language use and inquiry. We think about what kinds of leaves for which part of the body. We problem solve – This won’t stick. Do I need more glue for this part? Canyon was so focussed in their work. Well-done!

We counted the number of animal photo cards we have – 47 different animals in their different habitats. We played a matching game. We made origami dogs and cats. We reviewed shapes like squares and triangles at the same time too!

SWEET POTATOES- DIG, DIG, DIG!

We ended the unit on a SWEET note… we went to one of Canyon student’s family farm – sweet potato farm! There were no animals but there were lots of SWEET POTATOES – gigantic, humongous, enormous ones! It was hard work, but Canyon did not give up! Our reward was the delicious bento lunch prepared by our dear Mummies and Daddies. Thank you! Gochiso-sama-deshita! Till next week, have a lovely weekend.
