Nagano Milky Way: Aha for Signs and Symbols! (Nov. 4th-7th)

This Week’s Learning Adventure: Discovering Signs and Symbols!

This week, our curious learners explored the fascinating world of signs and symbols! We began by observing the different shapes and pictures around us and learned that signs and symbols are not just drawings — they are pictures or shapes that carry meaning and communicate messages to people.

As we explored our school building, we discovered several signs, such as the warning sign — a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark that tells us something might be dangerous — and the emergency exit sign, which shows us where to go in case of an emergency.

Some of us even drew our own pictures like flowers and trees or copied words, thinking they might be signs too! Through our discussion, we realized that while they are lovely drawings, real signs and symbols have specific purposes: they help share information or send important messages that people can easily understand.

During our walk to the park, we continued our hunt and found even more signs along the street! We were excited to spot them and wondered what each one meant.

Our next step in this inquiry is to discover the meanings of those street signs — and to keep our eyes open for more signs and symbols in our everyday world!

Playtime!

We had a wonderful time enjoying the fresh air and sunshine during our playtime at the park! The children’s imaginations were in full swing as they explored nature and created their own little adventures.

One of our favorite moments was collecting pinecones and pine leaves. With big smiles and creative minds, the children pretended the pinecones were pasta and the pine leaves were pears, cooking up delicious “meals” in their pretend kitchens, or making a fire with two sticks. It was amazing to see how everyday nature items could turn into something so imaginative!

We also had lots of fun walking around the park, swinging high on the swings, and sliding down the slides again and again. Laughter and joyful voices filled the air as everyone played, shared, and took turns.

It was a day full of creativity, movement, and friendship — the perfect way to learn, explore, and have fun together outdoors!
