Excitement was in the air as Canyon decorated the school and our classroom in anticipation of the holidays and Christmas. We helped with the big Christmas tree in the hallway as well as our very own Canyon tree. We learned words like baubles, candy canes, presents, reindeer, Santa.

UOI – BIG FEELINGS

In with the IB theme How We Express Ourselves, Canyon has been talking about how we can show our feelings – our facial expressions, actions, singing, dancing and dramatising. We ran through the lines for our play The Shoemakers and the Elves with lots of feelings… tired, surprised, happy, feeling love and being grateful. On stage, we have to show big actions so that our feelings can be conveyed to the audience!

Another big feeling highlighted in class is Anger. The book “When I Feel Angry” by Cornelia Maude Spelman portrayed young children’s feelings really well. “When someone makes fun of me… says something not so nice, I feel angry. When my friend does not want to play with me, I feel angry.” Why do you feel angry? Do you hit your friend? Canyon said NO. The book suggested that we walk away or just take big breaths and BLOW our anger out! We tried drawing those big feelings – anger and sadness. We read the sentences as well, pointing to the three words… “I am angry” and “I am sad”.

Canyon read another book by the popular Australian children’s book writer Mem Fox, which tells us “whoever you are, we cry the same, we hurt the same and we love the same”! Please see the the links below for the stories. Till next week, take care and have a restful weekend.
