Milky Way: Who helps us grow?(Jan 12th-16th)

Hi everyone!

We kicked off our week by enjoying collaborative play with our little brothers and sisters from the Shooting Star class. Milky Way students taught them how to play traditional Japanese games such as fukuwarai, kendama, and comas. They also enjoyed lunch together. Both classes had so much fun and said they hope they can do it again!

For UOI, we learned about who helped us grow from being babies into the children we are today. The students talked about how they think they grew from the baby stage and who they believe helped them grow. During the discussion, we all realized that community helpers such as paramedics and police officers do not contribute to their growth directly, but indirectly, in the sense that they show up in emergencies and help keep them safe.

Armed with this knowledge, the students then completed a sorting activity in which they categorized pictures of family members and community helpers based on whether the people helped them grow directly or indirectly. One remarkable moment during this UOI session was when a particular student chose a picture of a doctor and said that the doctor helped her grow directly by healing her when she was sick (maybe sometime in the near future they will all learn about vaccinations 😀.

To continue this discussion about the people who helped them grow, the students completed a worksheet in which they drew a picture of their current selves and pictures of the people who help them grow around it. They then wrote a sentence explaining how a particular person helped them grow. Below are some of the sentences they wrote:

“My mom makes me dinner”. “My dad plays with me.” “My grandpa teaches me mathematics.” “My mom helps me with homework.” “My mom helps me make crafts.” “My parents help me choose clothes to wear.” It was clear that MW students are critical thinkers and good communicators too!

We added a new phonics board game to our workstations, in which the goal is to read four words correctly in a row. The opponent tries to prevent this by blocking the other player by also reading words correctly. They all love this game, and it is helping them recall what they have already learned while becoming better readers.

~The week ahead~

Next week, we will learn more about how family members help us grow and support us in our learning and development.

Thank you for reading our blog!Have a great weekend!
