Unit 5 Begins: Learning from the Past

This week, we officially began our new inquiry unit, Tradition and Heritage. We started by focusing on our first learner focus, exploring how people in the past used available resources and ideas to solve problems and protect their communities.

The week began with a group activity where students worked together to think about everyday problems people may have faced long ago and discussed how they could have been solved using limited materials. This was followed by an independent project, where students selected one problem from the past and began researching possible solutions. Thanks to our expanded classroom library, students were able to use a wide range of books to support their research, look closely at illustrations, and deepen their understanding. It was great to see their curiosity and engagement as they worked.

Snowy Nakano

Nakano was covered in snow this week, and we took advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn outdoors. The snow was perfect for making shapes, and students quickly began experimenting by creating different forms and structures.

To connect this experience to our inquiry, students were challenged to try building a shelter using only snow. They worked together to test ideas, adjust their designs, and think carefully about stability and purpose, just as people in the past would have done when building with natural materials. It was a fun and meaningful way to connect our learning to real experiences.
