Celebrate good times, c’mon!
In the Savanna class, we continued exploring special days celebrated in Japan. We began with one event that children both love and find a little scary—Setsubun.
Savannaクラスでは、日本で祝われている特別な日についての探究を行いました。一番最近のお祝い事である「お正月」と、子どもたちが大好きでもあり、少し怖いと感じることもある行事の一つである「節分」からスタート！
お正月っていつ？みんなは誰と何をしたの？何を食べた？という話し合いから、おせちやお雑煮、初詣の意味を1つずつ知り、羽子板、かるた、けん玉などのお正月遊びも楽しみました！
Rather than simply explaining what Setsubun is, I will focus on how the discussion unfolded in class: The children were very excited at first, but once the demon appeared, some covered their eyes while others showed a bit of fear on their faces. This became a meaningful moment for conversation. We talked about what the demon really represents—whether it exists physically or not—and learned that these “demons” are actually the things inside our hearts: anger, sadness, or feelings that can hurt others.
節分についても同様に、何かを一方的に説明するのではなく、クラスでどのように話し合いが広がるかを大切にしました。最初、子どもたちはとてもワクワクしていましたが、「鬼」という言葉が登場すると、少し怖そうな表情を見せる子も。その様子が、深い話し合いにつながる大切なきっかけとなりました。
「鬼は本当にいるのかな？」「目に見える存在なのかな？」という問いから、鬼が表しているものについて考えました。鬼は実際にいる存在ではなく、怒りや悲しみ、誰かを傷つけてしまう気持ちなど、私たちの心の中にあるものを表しているのだということを、子どもたちと一緒に学びました。
To help chase these away, the children enthusiastically chanted again and again:
“Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi!”
こうした気持ちを追い出すために、子どもたちは何度も元気いっぱいに
「鬼は外、福は内！」と唱えました。
怖がらなくても大丈夫だよ😊🩷
Before wrapping up the week, we also explored other special celebrations for children in Japan—Kodomo no Hi for boys and Hina Matsuri for girls. We discussed the symbols used for each event, when they are celebrated, the traditional clothing worn, and the food enjoyed on these days. The conversation was full of excitement, especially as the children proudly identified themselves:
“I’m celebrated on Kodomo no Hi because I’m a boy!”
“I’m a girl, so I’m celebrated on Hina Matsuri!”
週のまとめは、男の子のための「こどもの日」と、女の子のための「ひな祭り」。鯉のぼりとお雛様を正しく並べるゲームから始まり、それぞれの行事で使われる象徴的なものや、行われる時期、伝統的な服装、食べ物について話し合いました。
子どもたちはとても楽しそうで、「鯉のぼり持ってる！」「ちらし寿司とケーキ食べたよ！」と、自分のことを誇らしげに話す姿が見られ、会話は大いに盛り上がりました。
It was a joyful and meaningful way to celebrate culture, identity, and learning together 🌈
文化やアイデンティティ、そして学びを、みんなで一緒に祝うことができた、喜びにあふれた意義深い時間となりました🌈
We’ve also started reading RAZ books, focusing on high-frequency words. The children are becoming more confident readers, and with continued practice, they’ll grow even more comfortable reading longer sentences and exploring new vocabulary.
また、RAZブックの読み取りも始め、高頻出単語に焦点を当てて取り組んでいます。子どもたちは少しずつ読むことに自信をつけてきており、これからも継続して練習を重ねることで、より長い文章を無理なく読めるようになり、新しい語彙にも積極的に挑戦していけるようになるでしょう。
