Another busy and exciting week in Shooting Stars! We continued our much-loved train station role play, as the children were enjoying it so much. There was lots of fantastic English being used as the children bought tickets, asked for help, and travelled to different places. We also talked about good train manners, such as speaking quietly, giving up your seat to someone who needs it more, and keeping our feet off the seats. The children then drew pictures to show what good manners look like, which sparked some great discussions.

In phonics this week, we focused on the “or” sound (as in fork). The children practised listening carefully to hear the difference between ar and or in words and then worked on spelling them. We were very proud when the class worked together to spell the word transport — a big word with lots of sounds!
In maths, we continued building our understanding of addition to 10 and base ten. The children are really starting to understand how numbers from 10–20 can be split into tens and ones, which is a huge step in their maths learning. To practise this in a fun way, we set up a pizza shop role play. There were three roles: the customer, the wait staff, and the chef. The wait staff had to politely ask, “May I take your order?” The customer ordered a pizza using toppings, for example, “Pizza with 2 tomatoes and 5 mushrooms.” The wait staff then wrote the matching sum on the order form (2 + 5 = 7), and the chef made the pizza using the props. Everyone had a turn to play each role, and it was lots of fun!

On Friday, we enjoyed a birthday party and cake. Our class is already all five years old, but we were happy to support and celebrate with our friends in other classes. We have also been reminding ourselves of our class agreements: we use English, we keep peaceful bodies during class time (sitting nicely and quietly), we do our jobs quickly, and we send out good vibes. When we have problems, we don’t use angry or whiny voices — we practise using clear, calm voices instead.
We have also been spending lots of time playing outside in the snow. It’s been cold, but very fun! ❄️
Have a great weekend!
