Lunch under the cherry blossoms, lizards and similies and smiles!
This week, we have got off to a great start!
On Monday, we ate lunch outside, sitting on blue sheets under the cherry blossoms. It was our own little hanami party, and we had a lot of fun spotting and catching lizards.
In science, we reviewed life cycles and learned about brumation, a seasonal adaptation that helps reptiles and amphibians survive the winter. We also started learning about food chains. Many of us wondered what lizards eat, so this will be a great chance to explore that, and perhaps learn about other local predators too.
In English, we have started our poetry unit. We will be learning about poetic devices while reading, analysing, comparing, and enjoying seasonal poetry. We began with I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, a spring poem about daffodils, and used it as a springboard to learn about similes and metaphors. These are wonderful tools for making writing more interesting and for creating vivid imagery and emotion. On Monday, we will begin writing our own poems. As we build our “poetry toolbox,” our writing will become more expressive. I am really looking forward to seeing what the children create.
We also received our new spelling words. This week, we are focusing on prefixes, practising and expanding our understanding of how they change the meaning of words.
In other news, we now have a class fish, caught from outside, although we are sadly down one terrapin. We enjoyed playing with pen pen gusa, and on Friday, we had a lovely trip to the park.
There are so many beautiful flowers around at the moment, including the golden daffodils that inspired our poem this week.

今週は、とても良いスタートを切ることができました！
月曜日には、桜の木の下でブルーシートに座りながら、外で給食を食べました。小さなお花見パーティーのようで、とても楽しい時間でした。トカゲを見つけたり、捕まえたりして楽しむこともできました。
理科では、ライフサイクル（成長の流れ）を復習し、爬虫類や両生類が冬を生き延びるための季節的な適応である「ブルメーション（冬眠に似た状態）」について学びました。また、食物連鎖についての学習も始めました。多くの子どもたちが「トカゲは何を食べるのだろう？」と興味を持っていたので、これからそれを調べたり、地域にいる他の捕食者についても学んだりしていきます。
英語では、詩の単元が始まりました。季節の詩を読み、分析し、比べながら楽しみつつ、詩の表現技法について学んでいきます。最初に『I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud（私は雲のようにさまよった）』という、スイセンが登場する春の詩を読みました。そして、それをもとに直喩（シミリー）や隠喩（メタファー）について学びました。これらは、文章をより面白くし、生き生きとしたイメージや感情を表すための大切な表現です。月曜日からは、自分たちで詩を書く活動を始めます。「詩のツールボックス」を増やしながら、より表現豊かな文章を書けるようになっていくのが楽しみです。子どもたちがどんな作品を作るのか、とても楽しみにしています。
また、新しいスペリングの単語も配られました。今週は接頭辞に注目し、それがどのように単語の意味を変えるのかを練習しながら理解を深めています。
その他のニュースとして、外で捕まえたクラスの魚が仲間入りしましたが、残念ながらミドリガメが1匹いなくなってしまいました。ペンペン草で遊んだり、金曜日には公園へ楽しいお出かけもしました。
今は、あたり一面にたくさんの美しい花が咲いています。今週の詩のきっかけとなった、金色のスイセンもとてもきれいです。
