A Great Start to Our New Unit!
Hello everyone,
This week we began our new Unit of Inquiry: How We Organise Ourselves.
We tuned in to the unit with a Think-Pair-Share activity based on the question:
“If you could improve one thing about our school, what would it be?”
We received some very creative answers! Suggestions ranged from having more recess and creating a secret student break room to making all teachers bald and installing golden toilets for students! The discussion generated lots of laughter and enthusiasm.
After sharing ideas, each group selected one proposal and was challenged to think critically about it. Students created a pros and cons table to identify both the benefits and potential problems of their idea. They considered important questions such as:
- How much would it cost?
- Is it fair for everyone?
- Is it realistic?
- What problems might arise?
This was a great introduction to the critical thinking and decision-making skills we will be developing throughout the unit.
In English, we began our work on persuasive writing by exploring the difference between facts and opinions. Students sorted statements into facts and opinions before creating some examples of their own. Understanding this difference will help them build stronger arguments and support their ideas with evidence in the coming weeks.
We also spent some time developing our artistic skills. Students learned a simple technique for drawing flowers from different perspectives, which came in very handy on Friday when we visited Ippongi Park. The weather was beautiful, the sun was shining, and the roses were absolutely spectacular. There were so many varieties to observe and sketch. We also had plenty of time to enjoy the playground together. I’ll add pictures soon!
As we walked through the rose gardens, I couldn’t help thinking of Alice in Wonderland, with the cards painting the white roses red and the Queen of Hearts shouting, “Off with their heads!”
Our Bug Hotel Project is continuing to gather momentum. This week we started preparing materials by stuffing bottles with grass, sticks, and other natural items that can provide shelter for insects.
We also have some exciting news! Lily’s dad has kindly sourced some wooden pallets for us, and AJB Brewing Company (Libushi) in Nozawa Onsen has generously offered to donate additional pallets and deliver them next Monday. We are incredibly grateful for this support, as it will save us a significant amount of money and help make our vision for a long-lasting bug hotel possible.
Thank you to everyone who has offered materials, ideas, and support so far. The students are becoming increasingly excited about the project, and we are looking forward to beginning construction soon.

新しいユニットの素晴らしいスタート！
みなさん、こんにちは。
今週から新しい探究テーマ 「How We Organise Ourselves（私たちはどのように組織されているのか）」 が始まりました。
ユニットの導入として、Think-Pair-Share（考える・ペアで話す・共有する）活動を行い、
「学校で一つだけ変えられるとしたら、何を変えたいですか？」
という質問について考えました。
子どもたちからはとてもユニークなアイデアがたくさん出ました！「休み時間をもっと長くしたい」「生徒専用の秘密の休憩室がほしい」というものから、「先生たちはみんな坊主頭にするべき！」「生徒用の金のトイレがほしい！」という面白い提案まであり、教室は笑いと盛り上がりでいっぱいでした。
その後、各グループで一つのアイデアを選び、その案について批判的思考を使って考えました。メリットとデメリットを表にまとめ、
- いくらくらいお金がかかるのか
- みんなにとって公平か
- 現実的か
- どんな問題が起こる可能性があるか
などについて話し合いました。
これは、これからのユニットで学んでいく「考える力」や「意思決定の力」を育てる良いスタートとなりました。
英語では、説得文（Persuasive Writing） の学習を始めました。まずは 事実（Fact） と 意見（Opinion） の違いについて学び、さまざまな文を分類したり、自分たちで例文を作ったりしました。これから、自分の考えを根拠とともに伝える力を身につけていきます。
また、図工では花をさまざまな角度から描くコツを学びました。そのスキルは金曜日の 一本木公園（Ippongi Park） で大活躍しました。天気にも恵まれ、美しいバラが満開で、本当に素晴らしい時間を過ごすことができました。たくさんの種類のバラを観察しながらスケッチをし、その後は遊具でも楽しく遊びました。
バラ園を歩いていると、私は思わず『不思議の国のアリス』を思い出しました。白いバラを赤く塗るトランプ兵たちや、「首をはねよ！」と叫ぶハートの女王の場面です。
バグホテルプロジェクトも順調に進んでいます。今週は、虫たちのすみかになるように、ペットボトルの中へ草や枝などの自然素材を詰める作業を始めました。
そして嬉しいニュースがあります！Lilyさんのお父さんが木製パレットを用意してくださり、さらに野沢温泉にある AJB Brewing Company（Libushi） さんからも使わなくなったパレットを寄付していただけることになりました。来週の月曜日に届けてくださる予定です。おかげで材料費を大きく節約することができ、本当に感謝しています。
これまで材料やアイデア、サポートを提供してくださった皆様、ありがとうございます。子どもたちもますます楽しみにしており、いよいよ本格的な建設を始められることを心待ちにしています。
