Hello everyone!
It has been another busy and creative week in Grade 4.
In English, we have been putting the finishing touches on our persuasive letters. The students have worked incredibly hard to develop their writing skills. They began by choosing an opinion they felt strongly about, then wrote an engaging introduction using a rhetorical question to capture the reader’s attention. They supported their opinions with detailed reasons, personal examples, and researched facts before considering a counter-argument and offering a possible solution. Finally, they concluded their letters with a strong closing statement.
I will be passing the letters on to Ms. Rose, and there is a possibility that some of the students’ ideas may be able to become a reality! Of course, there are many practical considerations, so this won’t be possible for every request, but it will be exciting to see if any of their suggestions can be put into action. More importantly, the students have learned that persuasive writing is a powerful way to express their opinions, advocate for ideas they believe in, and have their voices heard.
In Art, we continued exploring the work of Vincent van Gogh. We looked closely at several of his paintings and identified whether they were landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, or still lifes. We also used our imaginations by asking questions such as, “If you stepped into this painting, what would you hear? What would you smell? How would it make you feel?” These discussions encouraged the students to think beyond what they could simply see.
Inspired by The Starry Night, we then went outside to sketch the beautiful landscape behind our school. The students observed carefully and thought about how Van Gogh used movement, colour, and texture to bring a scene to life. When I returned on Wednesday, I was delighted to see that the class had continued their creativity by beginning to paint their artworks. I look forward to seeing the finished pieces!
As we move through the final weeks of term, we have also been talking about the importance of kindness and respect. One area we are continuing to work on is remembering that everyone deserves to be treated kindly, not only our close friends. We have also discussed that our classroom should be a place where we help one another succeed, rather than looking for each other’s mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes—that is an important part of learning—and we want our classroom to be a place where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and grow.
Perhaps this could be a lovely conversation to continue at home over the weekend: What does kindness look like when you’re with someone who isn’t your best friend? How can we help others feel included and supported, even when we have different personalities or opinions?

今週も4年生は、学びと創造力にあふれた充実した一週間を過ごしました。
英語では、**意見文（Persuasive Letter）の仕上げを行いました。子どもたちは、自分が強く伝えたいと思う意見を選び、読み手の興味を引くために修辞的疑問（Rhetorical Question）**を使った導入を書きました。その後、自分の考えを支える理由を、詳しい説明や自分自身の経験、調べた事実を交えながら書き進めました。さらに、反対意見についても考え、その解決策を提案し、最後に力強い結論で文章を締めくくりました。
完成した手紙は、Ms. Roseに渡す予定です。子どもたちのアイデアの中には、実際に実現できるものがあるかもしれません！もちろん、学校としてさまざまな点を考慮する必要があるため、すべての提案を実現することは難しいですが、いくつかのアイデアが形になるかもしれないと思うと、とても楽しみです。何よりも、子どもたちは自分の考えを伝え、意見を発信するために「書く力」が大きな力になることを学びました。
図工では、引き続きフィンセント・ファン・ゴッホの作品を鑑賞しました。それぞれの作品が風景画、街並みの絵、静物画、肖像画のどれにあたるのかを考えながら観察しました。また、「もしこの絵の中に入ったら、どんな音が聞こえるだろう？」「どんなにおいがするかな？」「どんな気持ちになるだろう？」といった想像力を膨らませる問いにも取り組み、作品への理解を深めました。
その後は、**『星月夜（The Starry Night）』**からインスピレーションを受け、学校の裏に広がる景色を外でスケッチしました。ゴッホがどのように色や筆づかい、動きを使って風景を表現したのかを意識しながら描きました。水曜日に教室へ戻ると、子どもたちが創造力を発揮し、作品に色を塗り始めている姿を見ることができ、とてもうれしかったです。完成が今から楽しみです！
また、学期の終わりが近づく中で、思いやりと尊重（Kindness & Respect）についても話し合いました。特に、「仲の良い友達だけでなく、誰に対しても優しく接すること」の大切さを改めて確認しました。また、教室はお互いの間違いを探す場所ではなく、お互いの学びを支え合う場所であることについても話しました。
間違いをすることは、学ぶ上でとても大切なことです。だからこそ、安心して挑戦したり、質問したり、新しいことにチャレンジできる教室をみんなでつくっていきたいと考えています。
