CANYON: LIFE UNDER WATER! JULY 21st TO 24Th

The Unit of Inquiry has been the highlight of the week as the learners continued exploring our first line of inquiry: Different kinds of animals. This week, they revisited aquatic animals and their understanding of these fascinating creatures, including sharks, dolphins, starfish, jellyfish, seahorses, sea lions, pufferfish, sea turtles, hammerhead sharks and angelfish. The learners looked closely at each animal and shared their observations about their physical features. When asked how many legs they thought a starfish had, they chorused counted and confidently answered “five.” They also made creative connections, such as when one child noticed a seal’s whiskers, said “whiskers,” and used their hands near their face to imitate them.

The learners further extended their understanding by watching a documentary about aquatic animals. As they watched, they eagerly identified the creatures they saw and shared their observations, repeating what they heard in the documentary such as, “This is a popular fish,” “stingray,” and “jellyfish.” When asked who had been eating the clownfish, one child thoughtfully answered, “Shark,” When one learner confused a shark with a dolphin, the class respectfully shared their ideas, and the learner reflected on their suggestions and accepted their feedback.

Throughout the learning experience, the children continued developing their communication skills by using complete sentences to identify animals. Many learners tried to use the sentence starter “This is…” to share statements such as “This is a fish,” “This is a shark,” and “This is a sea turtle.” To extend their understanding, the learners looked carefully at animal pictures around the classroom and discussed where each animal belonged. They agreed that the aquatic animals should be placed in the water zone because they live in water and went ahead to stick the animal pictures appropriately.

We have also started rehearsing for our upcoming Sports Festival. The learners have been enthusiastically exploring movement, rhythm and coordination through their practice sessions. They have been learning to follow the rhythm and lyrics of the theme song while practicing different movements, including moving their heads in circular motions, lying on the floor and fluttering their legs, doing the turtle pose, sliding their feet and jumping from left to right. The new movements appeared fascinating for some learners, while a few found them a little challenging as they worked on remembering the sequence and coordinating their bodies with the music.

We look forward to a more exciting week ahead.
