Sports Day Spirit and Shooting Stars – 9.28-10.2

Welcome back from the long weekend, Shooting Star families! We are very proud of every single student for their enthusiastic participation and outstanding team spirit during our Sports Day festival. From cheering on their peers to giving their all in every event, our students showed sportsmanship and teamwork.

September flew by in a flash, but it was filled with so many special moments including several birthday celebrations across the school and a very special birthday right here in the Shooting Star classroom! It has been wonderful to see our school community come together with so much joy, encouragement, and energy.

Garden Thinkers and Green Thumbs

Between the passing rain showers this week, the students made the absolute most of their outdoor playtime. Thanks to all the regular rainfall, our garden’s spider plants have been taking off at an incredible speed! To ensure we can easily identify and care for them before they grow beyond recognition, the students put their collaboration and teamwork skills to work. Communicating creatively within their groups, each team decorated a sign for their plant. These shared signs will allow the students to track their plant’s progress over time, even as they transition into new teams for our upcoming unit.

Sunshine, Park and Play!

Finally, with enough sunshine to risk a trip to the park, Shooting Star headed out to play. The students jumped at the chance to have imaginative and nature-focused play! Some inquiring students crafted a collection box to catch and observe small creatures, like stick insects, before setting them free, demonstrating great curiosity and care for wildlife. Others gathered wild berries and asparagus to prepare a creative pretend picnic together.

Fantastic Frog Flipbook!

To wrap up our Unit 2 exploration of living things, the class dove into a rich scientific inquiry focused on the frog life cycle. The students carefully examined each stage of a frog’s development and compared it to the butterfly life cycle, identifying exciting similarities and unique differences between how amphibians and insects grow. To reinforce their learning, students challenged their memories by sorting frog life cycle cards into the correct chronological order. Finally, they combined science with hands-on art to create a cute interactive “jumping booklet” of a frog sitting on a lilypad!
