Stories Are Everywhere! Rainforest 10/05 – 10/09

As we began our third Unit of Inquiry with the central idea, “Stories help people understand themselves and others,” the Rainforest learners started exploring our first Line of Inquiry: There are many ways of telling a story. (Stories help people understand themselves and others.)」 (There are many ways of telling a story.)」**について探究を始めました。

To spark their curiosity, our friends from Milky Way joined us for a “Give One, Get One” activity. Each learner chose a book, shared why they picked it, and listened to someone else’s choice and reason. As they exchanged books and ideas, little clues about our new unit started to appear. Soon, we heard someone say, “I think our next unit is about stories!” That was all it took! Suddenly, everyone had something to share: favorite stories, characters they love, books they remember, and stories they wanted their friends to know. It was a simple activity, but a wonderful way to open the door to our new inquiry.

Our exploration then took us beyond books and into the world of art during our visit to the Chihiro Museum. Surrounded by beautiful paintings and illustrations, the learners were encouraged to slow down, look closely, and notice the details. We wondered together: What is happening in this picture? What might the character be feeling? What story could this picture be telling?

What made the experience even more interesting was that the learners did not always see the same story. One picture could lead to many different interpretations! Naturally, they began wondering which answer was the “correct” one. Our guide, Ms. Tomoyo, gave them a beautiful idea to think about: whatever their imagination tells them can become the story they see in the artwork. This opened up even more questions for us. Can a picture tell a story without words? Can the same picture tell different stories to different people? Our visit became a wonderful provocation for the next stage of our inquiry as we delve deeper into how drawings and paintings can communicate stories.

Back in the classroom, our inquiry continued with a special guest. Ms. Michelle visited Rainforest as part of ISN’s Peer Observation professional development. During her first visit, she observed the Rainforest learners, our routines, and how learning happens in our classroom. A couple of months later, she returned—this time to lead the class herself!

The children were excited to learn with her, especially during UOI. Ms. Michelle introduced them to different ways of telling a story and invited them to observe photographs closely, think about what they already knew, and share the stories or ideas they could find within them. The Rainforest learners were highly engaged, listening to one another and eagerly contributing their own interpretations to the discussion.

And our inquiry has only just begun! Through books, conversations, photographs, drawings, paintings, and shared experiences, the learners are beginning to discover that stories are not only something we read. Stories can be told in many ways—and sometimes, the same story can mean something different to each of us.
