Exciting Times at Gojo Nagano: A Look at Grades 4 and 5!

As we enter the final 3 months of the school year here at our International School in Nagano, it’s exciting to see the hard work and enthusiasm of our Grades 4 and 5 students. These dynamic young learners are diving into a variety of activities that foster creativity, critical thinking, and a love for learning. From exploring technology through our Units of Inquiry (UOI) to rehearsing for our end-of-year music concert, there’s never a dull moment!

Focus on Technology in Our U.O.I.

This term, our Grades 4 and 5 students are exploring the world of technology through their Unit of Inquiry. In this inquiry-based learning framework, students are not just learning about technology—they are investigating its impact on society, both now and in the future. The central idea revolves around understanding how technology can shape the way we live, work, and communicate.

Students have been comparing the differences and similarities between ancient and modern technology. The UOI has sparked many discussions about the role of technology in their everyday lives and how it connects with broader global issues like sustainability, privacy, and digital citizenship.

What’s been particularly rewarding is seeing students’ ability to problem-solve and collaborate. Creating presentations about technology throughout history, students are encouraged to think critically and creatively, preparing them for a future where tech literacy and awareness might be more important than ever.

Preparing for the End-of-Year Music Concert

Another exciting highlight for our students is the much-anticipated end-of-year music concert. Our talented Grades 4 and 5 musicians have been practicing their performances with great dedication, whether they’re playing instruments or singing. It’s an incredible opportunity for students to showcase their musical talents, creativity, and teamwork.

The concert will feature a wide variety of musical genres, with performances ranging from classical pieces to more modern tunes. Students have been practicing regularly in music class and the results are already impressive. It’s wonderful to see their growth as musicians and performers, and we’re all looking forward to the final performance in the spring!

Interest Club Activities: Exploring Passions Beyond the Classroom

Beyond their core subjects, our Grades 4 and 5 students have been having a blast exploring their passions in Interest Clubs. These clubs allow students to explore topics they’re curious about, from sports and arts to ecology. It’s an excellent way for them to develop new skills, meet like-minded peers, and gain a sense of ownership over their learning.

Whether it’s creating sketches in the art club, cooking with the Eco-Club, or playing team sports, these clubs give students a break from the traditional classroom setting and allow them to dive into areas of interest they might not normally have time for. It’s a wonderful way for them to broaden their horizons and discover new talents or hobbies.

Preparing for the PYP Exhibition in March

One of the most exciting milestones in the PYP (Primary Years Programme) is the Exhibition, and our Grades 4 and 5 students are already beginning preparations for this pivotal project in March. The Exhibition is a culmination of the students’ learning throughout the year, and it’s an opportunity for them to work independently or in small groups on a research project that is personally meaningful.

Students will choose a topic related to the final Units of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet. It’s an incredible opportunity for students to develop their research skills, engage in critical thinking, and communicate their findings in creative ways. This year’s Exhibition promises to be an exciting showcase of the students’ hard work and dedication.

As we move closer to the end of the school year, it’s clear that Grades 4 and 5 are full of promise, creativity, and excitement. From the exploration of technology to the music concert, Interest Clubs, and the upcoming Exhibition, our students are growing both academically and personally, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next!

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our journey through an unforgettable school year!
