The Grade 5 and 6 students recently enjoyed an exciting and educational bus trip to Matsumoto Airport. It was a day full of curiosity, discovery, and hands-on learning that perfectly connected to our studies about technology and flight. Despite the chilly weather, students arrived full of energy and enthusiasm, ready to explore how airplanes work and how airports operate. The trip was a wonderful example of IB values in action, as students showed the spirit of being inquirers, thinkers, and communicators throughout the day.
One of the highlights was seeing a cut-out model of a jetliner from Fuji Dream Airlines. Students were able to explore how an airplane is organized inside, learning about the cargo hold where luggage is stored and the passenger cabin where travelers sit during flights. Even more exciting was the chance to step into the cockpit and see where the pilots control the aircraft. Sitting in the pilot’s seat sparked plenty of questions and imagination as students wondered what it must feel like to guide a plane through the sky.
The adventure continued when the group went down to the tarmac to watch real aircraft in action. Standing close to the runway, students watched planes take off and land, feeling the powerful engines as they geared up for departure. The moment became even more memorable when the pilots waved back to the students! It was thrilling to be so close to the action and see aviation technology working right before their eyes.
Throughout the visit, students asked thoughtful questions and explored many parts of the airport. They learned that the runway is about 2 kilometers long and discovered how many flights operate each day. They also examined helicopter landing pads, wind vanes that show wind direction and speed, and even learned about the special light signals that help keep pilots safe. Even though it was a cold day, the students’ excitement and curiosity kept everyone warm as they experienced a truly unforgettable day of learning.
