In this month’s MS blog, we’ll take a look at the book we’ve chosen as our main textbook – the Lift series of books. I sat down with one of the minds behind our curriculum to see what about the Lift series caught their attention.
So why Lift? Lift is a textbook series that is a part of the National Geographic family of textbooks. A number of our teachers have previous experience with other National Geographic textbooks. We have seen lots of success with those books, and have built trust with their offerings.
As for why Lift specifically? Lift is built on an inquiry-based approach to learning. It does not have to be fit into IB, as it was designed to suit the IB Middle Years Program. It also has a flexibility that lets us incorporate it into our specific program and work with our school’s other goals for our PIC. Finally, Lift can be used as a textbook both for speakers of English as a first language, and for those who speak it as a second language.
As Lift was designed to fit the IB inquiry-based approach, it is not just an English textbook. It includes topics which incorporate a variety of subjects and skills, just as our Elementary program Units of Inquiry require investigating ideas through a wide variety of approaches, from mathematically, to socially, to artistically and beyond. The topics in the textbook serve as a springboard into wider topics, with flexibility both in approach and in student interest.
The Lift series of books include both a workbook and audiovisual supplementary materials. Colorful photos, recordings, and engaging videos bring the words in the book to life, grabbing students’ attention and creating a connection to a wider world. Also, students can get extra practice outside of the classroom, or support with a topic they found especially challenging.
Finally, I asked if there was anything else about the books that offers something different for our students. One teacher mentioned that the books practice a type of English students don’t often get exposure to in everyday conversation – academic English. The kind of language they’ll be exposed to as they progress through higher education. Building familiarity early with this style can help them as they move on towards their futures. 今月のMSブログでは、私たちがメイン教材として選んだ「Lift」シリーズの本についてご紹介します。今回は、カリキュラム作成に関わった先生のひとりにお話を伺い、なぜこの「Lift」シリーズに注目したのかを聞いてみました。
では、なぜ「Lift」なのでしょうか？
「Lift」は、ナショナルジオグラフィックが出版している教材シリーズの一つです。私たちの教師の多くは、これまでにもナショナルジオグラフィックの他の教材を使った経験があり、その成果を実感し、信頼を築いてきました。
特に「Lift」を選んだ理由としては、「探究型学習（Inquiry-based Learning）」のアプローチに基づいて作られている点が挙げられます。IB（国際バカロレア）のMYP（Middle Years Program）に合わせて設計されており、IBに無理に当てはめる必要がありません。また、柔軟性が高く、私たちの学校の独自のプログラムやPIC（Personal Inquiry Cycle）の目標にも組み込みやすい教材です。さらに、「Lift」は英語を母語とする生徒だけでなく、第二言語として学ぶ生徒にも適した構成になっています。
「Lift」はIBの探究型アプローチに沿って設計されているため、単なる英語の教科書ではありません。内容にはさまざまな教科やスキルが組み込まれており、小学部のUnit of Inquiry（探究の単元）と同じように、数学的・社会的・芸術的など、多様な観点からテーマを探求できるようになっています。教科書内のトピックは、より広いテーマへの出発点として機能し、学び方や生徒の興味に応じて柔軟に展開できる点も魅力です。
「Lift」シリーズには、ワークブックや視聴覚教材も含まれています。カラフルな写真、音声、魅力的な動画などが本の内容を生き生きと伝え、生徒の興味を引きつけ、世界とのつながりを感じさせてくれます。また、教室外での自主学習や、苦手なトピックの補強にも活用できます。
最後に、「他にこの教材の特徴的な点はありますか？」と尋ねたところ、ある先生は次のように話してくれました。
この教材では、日常会話ではあまり触れる機会のない「アカデミックな英語」を練習することができます。つまり、生徒が将来高等教育に進む際に触れるような英語です。このようなスタイルの英語に早い段階で慣れることは、将来の進学や学びに大いに役立つでしょう。
