This week has been full of curiosity, excitement, and discovery in the Shooting Star class! We continued exploring our new Unit of Inquiry: Living and Non-Living Things, and the children have been thinking deeply, asking great questions, and sharing their thoughts with confidence. Through fun games, activities, and experiments, they’re learning what makes something alive—and why that matters.
今週のShooting Starクラスは、「好奇心」「ワクワク」「発見」に満ちた一週間でした！新しい探究ユニット『生きているもの／そうでないもの』の学びを続けており、子どもたちは深く考え、素晴らしい質問をし、自信をもって自分の考えを共有しています。楽しいゲームやアクティビティ、実験を通して、「何が生きているものなのか」「それがなぜ大切なのか」を学んでいます。
In our phonics lessons, we focused on CVC words from the -id word family. The Shooting Stars came up with words like kid, did, and bid, and discovered more through reading games. One of their favorite activities was when CVC words were taped to their friends’ backs—they had so much fun walking around and reading as many words as they could!
フォニックスのレッスンでは、-idの語族に属するCVC単語（子音・母音・子音からなる3文字の単語）に取り組みました。子どもたちは “kid（子ども）” や “did（〜した）”、 “bid（入札する）” などの単語を思いつき、リーディングゲームを通してさらに多くの単語を発見しました。特に人気だったアクティビティは、CVC単語が友だちの背中に貼られ、それを読み合って歩き回るゲーム！たくさんの単語を読もうと、夢中になって楽しんでいました。
Last week, after visiting the Forest Center, students reflected on the items they collected. One student observed, “Insects are living things because they move,” while another said, “Leaves are living things because they grow on trees.” It was heartwarming to see them connecting their observations with our big ideas.
先週のForest Center（森林センター）への訪問のあと、子どもたちは拾ってきたものを振り返りました。ある子は「虫は動くから、生きているものだと思う」と言い、別の子は「葉っぱは木に生えてくるから、生きていると思う」と話してくれました。こうして、子どもたちが自分の観察と学びを結びつけていく姿に、心が温かくなりました。
This week, we did a sorting activity to help understand the difference between living and non-living things. Each child picked a picture and decided where it belonged. Using the idea that “living things can move and grow,” some children placed items like alarm clocks, balloons, and airplanes into the “living” category.
To clarify their thinking, we did an observation experiment the next day. The teacher showed a toy tiger and a toy car and asked questions like: “Can it move by itself?” “Can it grow bigger over time?” “Does it need help to move?” The students realized that real tigers move on their own and grow, while cars only move with help and stay the same size. This helped them understand the true characteristics of living things.
今週は、「生きているもの」と「そうでないもの」の違いを理解するための分類アクティビティも行いました。一人ひとりが絵を選び、それがどちらのカテゴリに入るかを考えました。「生きているものは動いたり成長したりする」という考えをもとに、目覚まし時計や風船、飛行機などを「生きている」と分類した子もいました。
そこで翌日、「本当に生きているものって何だろう？」をはっきりさせるために、観察実験を行いました。オモチャのトラと車を見せ、「自分で動ける？」「時間がたてば大きくなる？」「動くのに助けがいる？」などの質問を投げかけました。子どもたちは、「本物のトラは自分で動くし、大きくなる」「車は助けがないと動けないし、大きくならない」という違いに気づきました。こうして、生きているものの特徴をより深く理解することができました。
We also talked about why living things move. The children learned that animals move because they need to: find food, protect themselves, and look for a home. This discussion helped them understand that movement isn’t just fun—it’s necessary for survival!
また、「なぜ生きているものは動くのか？」についても話し合いました。動物は、食べ物を探したり、自分の身を守ったり、住む場所を見つけたりするために動くことを学びました。子どもたちは、動くことはただ楽しいだけでなく、「生きるために必要なんだ」と気づくことができました。
It was a fantastic week of wonder, discovery, and learning. The Shooting Stars are growing into thoughtful inquirers who ask great questions and explore the world around them with enthusiasm. We can’t wait to see what they discover next week!
