Milky way: Exploring story styles and the emotions portrayed in stories(October 27th-31st)

Hello everyone! Our week began with an inquiry into “story styles(genre)”, as the other element of stories. The students took turns to act out emotions and feelings in front of their peers and then labelled pictures that showed various feelings. Some of the words they used to label the pictures include, angry, sad, worried, scared, happy, excited, surprised, thinking(pensive) and sleepy(bored).

They then listened to 2 stories of different genres. “Why should I eat well?” and “Pip & Egg”, which I will refer to as book 1 and book 2 henceforth. After listening to both books, they tried to answer the following questions:1️⃣What kind of story is this? Is it funny, scary or exciting?2️⃣Can what happened in the story happen to real people or make-believe characters?Their answers were as follows for book 1: 1️⃣”It was scary to me because I learned that If I eat too many sweet foods I can get sick.”2️⃣”I think it can happen to real people because sometimes I eat sweet foods and healthy foods.” For book 2 they were:1️⃣”It was a happy story because the bird had a baby at the end.”2️⃣”An egg and the plant were talking so I don’t think what happened in the story can happen in real life or to real people.”

To continue this inquiry into story styles, they watched videos that explored various emotions and feelings and then they talked about how they can incorporate emotions and feelings into their Christmas show roles to drive their points across to the audience.

To wrap up this week’s exploration of story styles and how different types of feelings and emotions can be expressed in stories, they did an emotions charades. They had to guess the feeling or emotion their peers were acting out. Some of them said,”I think you are sleepy/bored”, “you look like you are excited”, “you are yawning so I think you are tired” and “are you scared?” These responses match the pictures below in chronological order.

For phonics they learned about the fl and fr blends. They will come across many words that contain fr and fl as they read various books in the next few months. The phonics lessons are proving very helpful in terms of improving their reading skills.

The students had been talking about the Halloween party for quite a while. Asking one another what they were going to wear on their last Halloween party as ISN preschoolers. It was clear that a lot of effort was put into preparing for the costumes!

This week’s show and tell sessions were exciting. We listened to our friends talk about their favorite toys and things they made with their parents at home. Someone made water dumpling jelly with their dad!

~The week ahead~

Next week we will move on to talking about “conflicts and solutions” as the last elements of stories. We will also continue exploring how emotions are portrayed in stories and try to connect this to our Christmas show play.

Thank you for reading our blog!Enjoy the long weekend!
