Milky Way: Story Builders: Understanding a plot and settings. (October 20th-24th).

This week we moved on to discovering about settings and plot as the other elements of a story. To whet the students imagination and to get their thinking motors on and raving, we looked at an assortment of pictures and tried to name whatever we noticed in those pictures. Exclamations such as, “that looks like lots of sand(dessert), “that looks very cold( Antarctica),”that’s a galaxy”, “I think that’s a farm” , were heard during UOI. At the end of the lesson, we all defined a SETTING as where(place) and when(time) a story takes place. To further drive home the point, we did a “build a setting” activity where the students listened to the story, “Goldilocks and the three bears” and had to identify the settings in the story. They then had to choose one setting and try to make the setting as a group using tissue paper rolls, craft paper, markers, color pencils, glue and scissors. One group chose to make a bedroom, the other a kitchen and the other the outdoors. They all had fun!

Our inquiry into what a PLOT is began by pretending to drive a car up a hill. Our task was to focus on the three points the car was going to stop. The students then said ,”when the car is at the bottom it is at the start, when it moves up it’s at the top and when it goes back down it’s at the end.” At the end of the lesson, we all agreed that we can define a plot as the beginning, the middle and the end of a story.

We made a witch’s hat and hair craft for Halloween. They decorated the hat with designs of their personal choice, shaped the hat and put hair strands around the inner rim of the hat to make the witch’s hair flow down from the hat. They then pasted a bat onto the witch’s hair. 🦇This craft required them to use their fingertips so they had an opportunity to perfect their fine motor skills. They also reviewed their knowledge about shapes by making a cone as the top part of the hat.

Last week we enjoyed interacting with students at Gojo campus . We played many games together. The green light red light game, scavenger hunt and joined interest clubs after having our bentos. These clubs included, soccer, frisbee, badminton and skate boarding. Skateboarding was the popular choice for Milky Way!We are so grateful for the opportunity that we were given to learn and enjoy with our big sisters and brothers from another campus. Thank you Gojo campus!

This week’s tennis lesson was fun!

We started a Milky Way theater last week. The students can freely play and create their own characters or impersonations while others watch and enjoy. This will hopefully help them appreciate the importance of stories and how stories can bring joy into their lives and the lives of those around them.

~The week ahead~

Next week we will move onto talking about the other element of stories-theme(genre). We will be talking about the emotions that are portrayed in different types of stories. We will also focus on connecting these emotions to our own Christmas Show play.

Thank you for reading our blog. Have a nice weekend!
