Final Project: Creating Our Community Maps
This week, the students officially began their final project for our unit Government and Community. For this project, each group is creating a detailed community map that shows important city services, workers, and landmarks. The purpose of the project is to help students understand how governments organize communities, provide services, and support people’s daily lives. By designing their own maps, students can demonstrate how different roles, places, and systems connect to make a city work smoothly.
今週、生徒たちは「政府とコミュニティ」のユニットの最終プロジェクトをスタートしました。このプロジェクトでは、各グループが市の重要なサービス、働く人々、ランドマークを描いたコミュニティマップを作成します。プロジェクトの目的は、政府がどのように地域を組織し、人々の生活を支えているのかを理解することです。自分たちの地図をデザインすることで、さまざまな役割や場所、仕組みがどのように連携して街を支えているのかを表現します。
Before beginning their maps, the students reflected on their past projects. They discussed what went well, how they managed their time, and what they could do better this time. To start this project, they had a planning hour where each group decided on roles and deadlines for different tasks. Some students are in charge of drawing, others of labeling or writing explanations, while others organize the map layout and design.
マップ作りを始める前に、生徒たちはこれまでのプロジェクトを振り返り、うまくいった点や時間の使い方を話し合いました。そして、今回のプロジェクトではどのように改善できるかを考えました。最初に行った計画の時間では、各グループがそれぞれの役割を決め、タスクごとの締め切りを設定しました。描く担当、ラベルや説明文を書く担当、構成を整える担当など、分担を決めて協力して進めています。
This project also brings together different subjects in a meaningful way. In Math, students are using rulers and scales to measure distances accurately and to create maps that are proportional. In Social Studies, they are applying what they learned about local and prefectural government services to decide what to include on their maps. In English, they are writing short explanations and labels in complete sentences, practicing clarity and accuracy in communication. Art is also a key part, as students design colorful, organized, and visually clear maps that reflect their creativity.
このプロジェクトでは、さまざまな教科の学びを組み合わせています。算数では、定規と縮尺を使って正確に距離を測り、比例の取れた地図を作成します。社会科では、市や県の政府の役割や地域サービスについて学んだ内容を活かし、地図に何を含めるかを考えます。英語では、地図の説明文やラベルを完全な英文で書き、明確で正確な表現を練習します。さらに**図工（美術）**では、色使いやレイアウトを工夫しながら、見やすく創造的な地図をデザインします。
Everyone is now working hard with their group to get their maps ready for next week. The classroom is filled with discussion, teamwork, and creativity as students bring together everything they have learned throughout the unit.
