Naming and identifying our feelings help us talk about them. Expressing our feelings in colours make them visible. In the book ‘The Colour Monster’ by Anna Llenas, we read that yellow is happiness. It “shines like the sun and twinkles like the stars”. Yellow – Happiness, Blue – Sadness, Red – Anger, Black – Fear, Green – Calm, Pink – Love. We painted the colour monster using the crayon resist method. First we drew with oil pastel crayons, then paint over with watercolour paint. “Oh we can still see the crayon. We are painting with water!” Savanna said.
We played a game ‘Simon Says’ using feeling words from The Colour Monster book. The game master called out, “Simon says… be happy.” The class had to jump and clap. If the instructions did not include the words ‘Simon Says’, the class would not follow the actions. Listening closely is the key!
Understanding the reasons behind our feelings are important. Thinking about how someone else feels is important too. With various Japanese artwork, we tried to identify the feelings and explain why. “He is angry because he doesn’t have the toy. She is excited and happy because tempura is yummy!”
One of our Savanna students was humming this lovely song in class. “Sing of happy, not sad…” We searched for the music on Youtube and shared it with the rest. Savanna loved it so much that we decided that “Sing A Song” should feature in our year-end Christmas Show! Till next week, have a wonderful weekend singing along with the Carpenters!
