Back to reality! – Savanna 8/18-8/22 – International School of Nagano

We are very happy to be back! 🌸

We hope everyone had a wonderful Obon Holiday! The children returned to school full of stories and excitement. Some proudly shared how they bonded with their grandparents, others told us about their family trips and even which hotels they stayed at, while some happily shared how they relaxed at home and enjoyed time with their family. No matter what they did, one thing was clear—the break gave them joy and precious family moments! 💕

皆さま、お盆休みはいかがお過ごしでしたでしょうか。
子どもたちはたくさんの思い出とわくわくを胸に、元気に登園してきてくれました。

おじいちゃん、おばあちゃんと過ごした時間を誇らしげにお話ししてくれた子、家族旅行のことや泊まったホテルについて話してくれた子、またおうちでのんびり家族と過ごした様子を嬉しそうに話してくれた子もいました。

過ごし方はそれぞれでしたが、どの子もお休みが喜びやかけがえのない家族の時間につながったことが伝わってきました💕

During our first week back, we also had an earthquake drill during naptime. This became a meaningful experience for the children as they were able to practice what to do during an emergency and reflect on how it feels. We were proud to see them respond calmly and responsibly.

今週は、お昼寝の時間に地震を想定した避難訓練も行いました。
子どもたちにとって、非常時にどう行動すればよいかを実際に練習し、またその時の気持ちを振り返る貴重な経験となりました。

落ち着いて、責任を持って行動する子どもたちの姿に、とても頼もしさを感じました。

Our Unit of Inquiry is now progressing to the next stage. We have completed Line of Inquiry 1: Community Helpers and their jobs. Now we are delving into Line of Inquiry 2: The reasons why people help others in the community.

私たちのUOI、探究の単元は次のステージへ。
これまでのLOI1「コミュニティヘルパーとその仕事」を終え、LOI2「人々が地域で他の人を助ける理由」について学びを深めています。

The reasons why people help other in the community

To launch this, we used a provocation—a short story about a lion who received help from a little mouse. After watching, the children reflected and shared their thoughts. We asked: What happened in the story? What could have happened if the mouse hadn’t helped the lion? Their responses were thoughtful and caring:

“I think the mouse helped the lion because he was in pain.”
“I think the lion would be sad if the mouse didn’t help him.”

We will continue to inquire more deeply into why people help each other in the community and encourage students to make connections between the story and their own lives.

この学びの導入として、「プロヴォケーション(きっかけとなる活動)」を用いました。
大きくて強いライオンが昼寝中、小さなネズミ起こされてしまい、腹を立て食べようとします。しかしネズミにお願いされ見逃してあげたライオン。今度は自分が網にかかり捕まってしまいます。その時、網をかじってライオンを助けてくれたのは…。

私たちは子どもたちに問いかけました：
「お話の中で何が起こったかな？」
「もしネズミがライオンを助けなかったら、どうなっていたと思う？」

子どもたちからは思いやりのある、考え深い答えが返ってきました。

「ネズミは、ライオンが痛がっていたから助けたんだと思う。」「もしネズミが助けなかったら、ライオンは悲しかったと思う。」

今後も引き続き、「なぜ人は地域でお互いを助け合うのか」について、より深く探究していきます。
また、このお話と子どもたち自身の生活とを結びつけられるような働きかけが、家庭とスクールとで揃ってしていけたらいいな、と感じています。
