Hi everyone!
Our class had a special field trip to the clean center with the Milky Way class from Minami campus. This collaboration between both campuses is to deepen the students’ knowledge about our current unit of inquiry, where we are discussing “recycling.” During this trip, our youngsters learned how the trash picked up by the garbage trucks can be recycled. They saw how to manage and segregate the waste at the center. There were a big crane picking up the trash from the ground and putting it in the recycling area where it is burned. We were also told that the energy generated from the trash helps the pool near the center to get hot water. Aside from segregation, we also watched how the machine recycles used paper into new colored paper in just 5 seconds. The Rainforest students asked many questions, such as “Why do you recycle? It was a great trip, indeed, to witness how recycling works.

Safety first!
As part of the school’s preparation for natural disasters like earthquakes, we conducted a drill with the parents. First, we talked about what an earthquake is and the rules to follow when it happens. Next, we practiced the safety precautions such as drop, cover, and hold. It was great to see how knowledgeable our little ones are when it comes to doing the drill. When they heard the bell ring, everybody covered their heads and hid under the table. When the earthquake stopped, we gathered all our belongings and evacuated. The parents picked them up early as part of the drill.

Aside from doing the earthquake drill at school, we also conducted it at the park with the Savanna class. This kind of training helps the children become aware that an earthquake or any other dangerous event can happen anytime and anywhere. It is important to enlighten them about what the scenario would be if an earthquake occurs while we are at the park and what we need to do. It is also a vital preparation for the teachers. The drill went well, and everybody could follow the instructions. Well done!

In our phonics lesson, we started learning about “short and long vowels.” First, we learned the vowels: a, e, i, o, u, and their long and short sounds. Then, for our activity, the students chose a word, read it in front of the class, and categorized it. Here’s a glimpse of our activity.

This week, we also sowed green soy beans seeds. First, we took the seeds out of the bag and smelled them. It smells white,” said one of the students. They found out that they smelled like beans. The five steps of planting seeds, (1) mixing the soil, (2) adding water, (3) making a hole for the seed, (4) placing the seed, and (5) covering the seed with soil, were explained to the students, who discussed and divided the work among themselves. They were able to sow the seeds very well while keeping the order. Every day, little Helpers check and water the soy beans. We are looking forward to seeing them sprout. And what a surprise! Sprouts have sprouted from the pots in which we had planted the seeds we picked up at the park earlier! What a cute sprout, everyone was so happy.
