Savanna and What We Do: April 15-19

In Savanna, we are serious about our outdoor playtime. We take long walks and we talk to our neighbours like Madam Farmer. We soak in Nature’s sights and scents – the honking ducks in the river and the smell of Spring in a field of dandelions!

Savanna asked Madam Farmer what she was growing. “Leeks, onions and potatoes,” she gladly answered. The teachers pointed to a row of spring onions. A very curious student asked: “Where is the onion?” A fantastic question that will lead to a series of inquiries about underground tubers.

“Wow, flower buds! Five petals! They are pink,” gushed Savanna. In the park, we discovered different types of cherry blossom trees. We climbed a little hill too. What goes up must come down! That hill reminded us not only of Jack and Jill but of Totoro in the song, Stroll “Over the hill, across the field, through the tunnel we’ll go“. This was our favourite song for the week. Savanna is still learning the lyrics, but we fully experienced the hill climb! Please see the link below.

Back in the classroom, we discussed what it means to be in a student in class. Our first line of inquiry – as a student, what do YOU WANT to do in Savanna? The responses came fast and furious. Hands shot up into the air! Read a book. Make origami. Play with toy cars. Go for swimming class. Play with animal toys. Play chef in the kitchen. Play with all my friends! Be a line leader, count my friends!

How many students are there in Savanna? How do you read and spell your name? To find out, we made a Names Chart. Each student coloured in their names and counted the number of letters too. Who has 3 letters in their names? Who has 1 more letter, 4? Who has the longest name, and how many letters? Getting to know one another is also a discussion in numeracy concepts. Math is everywhere!

In Music class, Savanna remembered the ‘peace signs’ with their fingers. With that, the C note ‘doh’ is located on the keyboard with their thumbs. Good job! Till next week, take care and have a beautiful Spring weekend.
