🌊 Sharing the Planet – Water, Every Drop Matters (Unit Update)

Over the past few weeks, Grade students have been exploring our Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry: Water — Every Drop Matters. Students have been learning about why clean water is essential for living things and how human actions can affect access to water around the world.

Through experiments, discussions, reading, and collaborative activities, students have begun to understand that water is not only important for people, but also for animals, plants, and entire ecosystems.

🔍 What We Have Learned So Far

Students have been inquiring into:

  • Why clean water is important for living things (Function)
  • How people use and manage water and natural resources (Causation)
  • How our choices can help protect water for the future (Responsibility)

Students showed strong curiosity when investigating how water moves, how pollution affects environments, and how communities depend on safe water sources.

🚀 Where Our Inquiry Is Going Next

As we move into the next phase of the unit, students will deepen their understanding through creative projects that allow them to demonstrate their learning in different ways.

New Lines of Inquiry

  • How water moves through natural and human-made systems
  • How communities around the world access and protect water
  • How we can communicate important messages about water conservation

🎨 Student Action Projects

Students have chosen to demonstrate their understanding by creating projects that teach others about water responsibility. Working individually or in groups, students are creating:

  • 🏞 Dioramas showing water systems, rivers, or communities and their water use
  • 🎭 Puppet shows demonstrating water conservation stories or problems and solutions
  • 🪧 Posters encouraging responsible water use and environmental awareness
  • 🧩 Models of water cycles, filtration systems, or sustainable communities

Through these projects, students are developing:

  • Communication skills by sharing ideas clearly
  • Research skills by gathering information
  • Social skills through collaboration
  • Creative thinking by designing solutions and messages

🌱 IB Learner Profile Connections

Students are becoming:

  • Inquirers – asking thoughtful questions about the world
  • Thinkers – exploring solutions to real problems
  • Communicators – sharing ideas through creative expression
  • Caring – understanding how their actions affect others and the planet

💧 How Families Can Support at Home

You can support learning by:

  • Talking about ways your family uses water each day
  • Encouraging children to turn off taps when not in use
  • Discussing how we can reduce waste at home
  • Asking your child to explain what they are creating for their project

We are excited to see students bring their understanding to life through creativity and action as we continue exploring how every drop truly matters.
