In our Unit of Inquiry under How We Express Ourselves, students began exploring LOI 2: How people celebrate in different ways around the world. Through this inquiry, they are developing their understanding of perspective and growing as confident communicators while discovering how celebrations bring people together in joyful and meaningful ways.
現在、Unit of Inquiry「How We Express Ourselves」の中で、LOI 2「世界では人々はどのようにさまざまなお祝いをしているのか」の探究が始まりました。この学びを通して、子どもたちは「ものの見方（perspective）」への理解を深めながら、自信をもって表現するコミュニケーターとして成長しています。そして、お祝いがどのように人々を喜びや意味のある形でつなげているのかを学んでいます。
Our journey started with a large world map, where we located Japan and explored other countries around the globe. Students excitedly shared where they would like to travel one day. To make our learning interactive and fun, we created airplane origami and went outside to fly around the school yard. Country flags were posted in different areas, and students flew their airplanes to their dream destinations, saying, “I want to go to China!” “I want to go to Croatia!” and “I want to go to the Philippines!” This hands-on activity helped students understand that the world is full of diverse cultures and traditions.
学びは大きな世界地図からスタートしました。日本の場所を確認し、世界のさまざまな国について調べました。子どもたちは「いつか行ってみたい国」を嬉しそうに発表してくれました。学びをより楽しく体験的にするために、折り紙で飛行機を作り、園庭で飛ばしました。園庭のあちこちに国旗を掲示し、子どもたちは飛行機を持って「I want to go to China!」「I want to go to Croatia!」「I want to go to the Philippines!」と言いながら、自分の夢の行き先へ飛び立ちました。この活動を通して、世界には多様な文化や伝統があることを実感しました。
We were honored to welcome Mr. Igor, who introduced us to Christmas traditions in Croatia. Students learned how families celebrate with meaningful decorations, including a special heart ornament with a mirror in the center that symbolizes love and reflection. After listening carefully and asking thoughtful questions, students created their own heart crafts inspired by Croatian Christmas decorations. As they colored and decorated their large heart-shaped papers, they thoughtfully reflected on the loved ones they would give their hearts to.
また、クロアチアのクリスマスについて紹介してくれたMr. Igorをお迎えしました。家族で飾る特別なオーナメントについて学びました。特に、中央に鏡がついたハート型の飾りは「愛」と「振り返り（reflection）」を象徴していることを知りました。子どもたちは真剣に話を聞き、質問もしながら理解を深め、その後クロアチアのクリスマス飾りにインスピレーションを受けたハートの制作を行いました。大きなハート型の画用紙に色を塗りながら、「このハートを誰にあげたいかな」と大切な人のことを思い浮かべていました。
Our exploration continued as we traveled to China with our friend’s dad, who shared how families celebrate Chinese New Year. Students watched a lively video of the Lion dance and learned about the exciting Lo Hei ritual, where families gather around a table to toss a colorful salad while saying good wishes for prosperity and happiness. Everyone had fun pretending to mix and toss the salad together, practicing new Chinese words and celebrating as a community.
次に、中国のお正月についてお友だちのお父さまからお話を伺いました。子どもたちは迫力ある獅子舞（Lion Dance）の動画を見たり、「ローヘイ（Lo Hei）」という伝統的な習慣について学びました。家族がテーブルを囲み、色とりどりのサラダを高く持ち上げながら混ぜ、「繁栄」や「幸せ」を願う言葉を言い合う様子に興味津々でした。みんなでサラダを混ぜる真似をしながら、新しい中国語の言葉にも挑戦し、コミュニティとしてお祝いする楽しさを体験しました。
We also discovered how people in the Philippines celebrate New Year. Students were amazed by the many traditions, such as making loud noises at midnight using firecrackers or even pots and pans to drive away bad luck and bad spirits. They made connections to Setsubun in Japan, where people throw beans to chase away bad luck. Students also found the Filipino “New Year jump” very funny — jumping as high as possible at midnight in the hope of growing taller in the coming year!
さらに、フィリピンの新年のお祝いについても学びました。真夜中に花火や鍋・フライパンなどで大きな音を出し、悪運や悪い精霊を追い払うという伝統に子どもたちは驚いていました。日本の節分で豆をまいて鬼を追い払うことと似ている、と気づく姿も見られました。また、「ニューイヤージャンプ（New Year jump）」と呼ばれる、背が伸びることを願って真夜中にできるだけ高くジャンプする習慣にも大笑いしていました。
Throughout the week, students compared how Japan and other countries celebrate Christmas and New Year. They noticed that while fireworks are commonly used in some countries to welcome the New Year, in Japan people often hear the ringing of temple bells at midnight, and fireworks are usually seen in the summer instead.

一週間を通して、日本と他の国々のクリスマスやお正月の祝い方を比べました。新年を迎える際に花火をする国がある一方、日本では除夜の鐘を聞いて新年を迎え、花火は夏に見ることが多いという違いにも気づきました。
三連休となりますが、来週火曜日はスクールオープンデーです！これからも世界のお祝いについての探究を続け、子どもたちの学びを皆さまと共有できることを楽しみにしています。
