Hello everyone! This week in Shooting Star class, we had many exciting and meaningful learning experiences as we continued exploring celebrations from Japan through our Unit of Inquiry.

今週のShooting Starクラスでは、探究の単元（Unit of Inquiry）の一環として、日本のお祝いについて学びながら、たくさんのワクワクする、そして意味のある学びの時間を過ごしました。

We began the week by learning about Japanese celebrations, especially Setsubun. Since we learned about Setsubun last week, everyone was excited and waiting for the demon to come on Tuesday, February 3rd. The students wondered when the demon would arrive—in the afternoon or the evening? To prepare, the class made “beans” using newspaper and created newspaper balls.

In the afternoon, we heard screams from Aurora class and soon realized the demon had arrived! The students picked up their newspaper balls, threw them, and shouted, “Demons out! Good luck in!” A few students felt scared and cried, but most were very brave and faced the demon confidently. Later, when they saw their photos posted in the hallway, everyone laughed at their reactions.

週のはじめには、日本のお祝い、特に節分について学びました。先週すでに節分について学んでいたので、2月3日（火）に鬼が来ることを、子どもたちはとても楽しみにしていました。
「鬼は午後に来るの？それとも夜？」と、いつ来るのかを考えながら、準備として新聞紙を使って「豆」を作り、新聞紙ボールを用意しました。

午後になると、Auroraクラスから悲鳴が聞こえてきて、ついに鬼が来たことに気がつきました！
子どもたちは新聞紙ボールを手に取り、「鬼は外！福は内！」と元気に叫びながら投げました。少し怖くて泣いてしまった子もいましたが、多くの子どもたちはとても勇敢に、鬼に立ち向かっていました。
その後、廊下に写真が掲示されると、自分たちの表情を見て、みんなで笑い合っていました。

We also looked back at New Year celebration photos and focused on becoming better inquirers by using our thinking and communication skills. After friends shared about their photos, the students practiced asking thoughtful questions such as, “Why did you go to the shrine?” “What was your wish?” “Which shrine did you go to?” and “Did you go by car or did you walk?” The class led the discussion, and everyone learned from one another. It was a meaningful experience full of inquiry.

また、お正月のお祝いの写真を振り返りながら、思考力やコミュニケーションスキルを使って、よりよい探究者になることを意識して活動しました。
お友だちが写真について発表した後、子どもたちは
「どうして神社に行ったの？」
「どんなお願いをしたの？」
「どこの神社に行ったの？」
「車で行ったの？それとも歩いて行ったの？」
など、相手の話を深く知るための質問を考えて、実際に聞く練習をしました。

話し合いは子どもたちが中心となって進められ、お互いから学び合うことができました。探究にあふれた、とても意味のある時間となりました。

We were also very happy to receive many photos from Shooting Star parents. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful photos—they were very useful for our Unit of Inquiry. We sorted the photos by events, including Hinamatsuri, Children’s Day, Shichi-Go-San, Christmas, and celebrations from other countries. We then talked about how the students celebrated Christmas last year. They shared that they went to hotels, decorated, ate cake and chicken, and decorated Christmas trees. Afterward, they reflected on how they felt, and everyone said they were very happy because they spent special time with their families.

また、Shooting Starの保護者の皆さまから、たくさんの写真をお送りいただき、とても嬉しく思いました。素敵な写真を共有していただき、本当にありがとうございました。これらの写真は、探究の単元（Unit of Inquiry）での学習にとても役立ちました。

ひな祭り、こどもの日、七五三、クリスマス、そして他の国のお祝いなど、行事ごとに写真を分けて整理しました。その後、昨年のクリスマスをどのように過ごしたかについて話し合いました。
子どもたちは、ホテルに行ったこと、飾り付けをしたこと、ケーキやチキンを食べたこと、クリスマスツリーを飾ったことなどを共有してくれました。

最後に、そのときの気持ちを振り返り、みんな「家族と特別な時間を過ごせたので、とても幸せだった」と話していました。

Finally, one of our friends celebrated her birthday on Friday. We used this opportunity to think more deeply about why we celebrate birthdays. The students discovered that a birthday is the day you came out of your mother’s tummy and the day you first saw the world. We celebrate birthdays because we are alive—it is a celebration of life.

最後に、金曜日にはクラスのお友だちの一人が誕生日を迎えました。この機会を使って、「なぜ誕生日をお祝いするのか」について、より深く考えました。
子どもたちは、誕生日とは「お母さんのおなかから生まれてきた日」であり、「はじめてこの世界を見た日」だということに気づきました。
私たちは生きているからこそ誕生日をお祝いします。誕生日は、命を祝う日なのです。
